Hello Deborah , Welcome . I am sorry to hear about your sons diagnosis, what a shock for you all. We do have parents of young diabetics on here , hopefully they will be along soon as well as our fellow T1s who are very knowledgeable. It might help if you could give us a little more info , such as what insulins your on is on.

Welcome Deborah, sorry to hear of your son's diagnosis. Like the others say, we could help with more info. What regime is your son on? What have his numbers been like so far?

Hi deborah, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis - how did it come about? What insulin is he on?

It sounds like it is very early days for you still, so it's likely that there will need to be some adjustments made to insulin doses as you gain more knowledge and experience. How old is he?

I would highly recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas - considered to be the 'bible' for children and young people on insulin regimes, it covers all aspects of living with the condition, what to look out for and how to handle things.

Without more information it's hard for us to make any real comment on the rise in blood sugar levels after eating, as it could be due to a number of factors. If you can tell us a bit more, we might be able to give you a better explanation 🙂 Please ask ANY questions you have - there is a lot to learn, and very quickly, with Type 1, but things will get easier in time and it does not have to stand in the way of him achieving anything he sets his mind on. People from all walks of life have Type 1, yet it hasn't stopped them reaching the very top of their chosen field 🙂

What they all said Deborah - but you need urgent advice about adjusting doses of both insulins (assuming he's on a long acting one and also a short acting one that is supposed to deal with meals - and he should be). Contact his Medical Team first thing tomorrow - that's exactly why they are there - and they won't even bat an eyelid about you ringing them - they expect parents - and ANYONE newly-ish diagnosed - to need them a lot to begin with - and we still need to do it sometimes even after 45 years with it when we get stumped and need help with something.

thank you for all your replies I took him to doctors due to having headache for a week and I mentioned he drinks alot and has lost weight in the last week he was tested at doctors and admitted to hospital 45 mins later its only been two days he is on Novorapid and Levemir his numbers are 10.5 in morning then 2hrs later after b/fast 27.5 then 20.7 before lunch then 15.2 before dinner 2hrs after 18.3 at bedtime 15 that's day one out of hospital day two so far is 14 when woke up 27.4 2 hrs after b/fast 19.9 bfore lunch 2hrs later 15.7 before dinner 15.3 still waiting for after dinner for today I know its only 2 days in but is this normal and will it settle down he is 15 and worried like I am thanks for any help and advice

Yes Deb - it takes a while to sort out basic doses - cos it doesn't work to a formula and no two individuals will need the same amount of insulin. It does settle down to some degree but anyway especially at first, it's more than likely that his insulin producing cells aren't 100% dead yet - so if the ones that are still alive and kicking decide to revive a bit - that's another completely unknown equation. It isn't 'instant' whatsoever - which is exactly why the hospital team should be consulted, so they can advise you what adjustments to make and when.

Even after it's settled a bit - we need different doses of fast acting for different things we eat and whether there's any exercise being done that day - and there should be at his age and especially at school where I presume he has to do some sort of organised activity several times a week - and may be involved in extra in his own time anyway. But, not too far away in future you'll be wanting to work these out for yourselves - doctors don't treat diabetics - we do it! So - we all have to learn how to.

Get that Ragnar Hanas book - and both of you (and dad if he's part of the family of course) need to read it - and learn.

It is perfectly normal, at this stage, for BGs to be all over the place - but with the adjustments the team advise - not only tomorrow but as many times after that as you need to ask them - they and you will be able to plot the progress you make. When you get to the stage where you make adjustments yourself - you still need to see how each one pans out in order to assess whether it's a good change, a bad one or what.

We all need to do that, any time we change something - and it honestly just becomes automatic to do it, eventually! - and I know too you'll find that hard to believe right now.

Hi Debrorah
Warm welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum Deborah69. Have you been able to speak with someone from your son's diabetes team yet?

Hello and welcome, sorry to hear about your sons diagnosis, I hope it all settles soon. It took quite a while for me to get the right insulin's and doses for my body. He will get there 🙂

Hi Jane, sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes two days ago and I'm experiencing very similar results for blood sugar (starting about 14/15 then shooting up to 28 after eating what I think to be a low sugar meal). They've started me on the Novorapid but at a set dose, I think the aim will be to adjust the dose once learning how to match it to the amount of carbs in the meal. The meeting with the diabetic specialist team was very useful and helped me to understand the condition a lot more, and I left feeling much more confident that I'll be able to control the BS, did you have your meeting yet? I'm sure everything will settle down for your son soon enough, all the best x

not had meeting with team yet just diabetic nurse. he is now suffering with upset stomach and numbers all over the place waiting to hear back from nurse but he is becoming frustrated by results .

Hi Deborah, hope everything's ok, is he feeling any better? Early days hey :( hope things start to improve sooner rather than later xx (ps just realised I called you Jane in my previous reply, no idea why! Sorry about that) x

Also I've just received my copy of the book recommended on here (the Ragnar Hanas one). I've only looked through it briefly but have learnt a lot already. I'd imagine it would be very reassuring for parents x
