Hi all Ive just completed dafne although I do have a question on protein when background testing. It has infuriated me that they said the just eating protein will hardly at all raise blood sugar.......I here different views on this......a lot of people say that it does. So why do they insist it doesn't? Is it actually because peoples background insulin is incorrect and this is why they get a significant rise??? Am unsure what to do here. I need to basal test however the thought that I will be starving if don't have any protein but then I have the niggle in the back of my head saying adding protein will muck the testing up? I've even considered doing both and then showing the fans if there is a difference...however am sure they will say something ridiculous like it is different day so many factors can make a difference....also if am to test witbout protein any great suggestions what to eat where I won't be tempted to gnaw my own arm off? Infact some of the information was a bit infuriating and they won't accept that I have dawn phenomina when consultant says I have......I usually always rise from 4-5 by 2-3 mol. They said it doesn't shoot up enough.....sorry for the rambling I think I really just needed to vent my frustration and need some advice from people who actually deal with this on a daily basis........not knocking the course as was helpful just a bit confused!!!=-O

And another thing. They refuse to accept meters aren't accurate. I have been told that they are within 15 -20% range grrrrr

This is the level of accuracy they have to comply with, with some allowance for a small percentage of totally inaccurate ones (something like 2% can be way out, I believe), so they are correct on that point. It's not great, and there is a big campaign in the US at the moment trying to enforce greater accuracy than this.

As for protein, it most certainly does affect some people, but not everyone, and not to the same extent (this is diabetes, after all, and they should know that nothing is ever as simple as 'protein has no effect'! 🙄). There are some threads on this topic, I will try and search them out for you 🙂

Meant to say dafne said they were accurate however I was previously told they weren't.......they also really got twitchy about me having a cgm

Hi Astbury

Hope you got some good things out of DAFNE

How have they suggested running basal tests? Surely you'll only be skipping one meal at a time so you'll only be going without food for a few hours?

I would not recommend continuing the fast for much longer than one 'block' anyway (eg miss breakfast, test every 2 hrs, eat lunch) as longer fasts during the day might kick your liver into action.

I would say if you are going to do it, know that you've done it right. It's really not as hard as you might be expecting. If you were having am anaesthetic you would not eat for that. Millions of people go hungry every single day so it's good for us to experience a tiny bit of hunger every now and then IMO 🙂

If all else fails - sugar free jelly (though I've not needed to resort to that myself)

Hi yes did pick up some things but most things I've picked up are from this forum and all you expert's. They didn't really go much into testing apart from what u said bout one meal at a time. That's a good poi nt about sugar free jelly! I love jelly I will definitely try that. I think I definitely have background wrong for certain parts of the day. I am hoping to get the pump soon so hopefully this will be able to help

Yup, I don't eat, no point in messing it about, if you can do it without, and you won't know till you try. And protein does nowt to my BG as far as I've been able to discern for the last 41 years.

And as far as DP is concerned, what ARE they on about? Every human bean has DP, it's a flippin primeval instinct, you can't turn it off! - just that normal pancreases deal with it, is all. Ours don't.

Alright, you may very well not shoot up by 10, but you will increase as sure as God made little green apples. The night-time testing will nail down when it starts and the morning testing will nail down when it stops. But there again you will have basal on the go, so it won't be till after the pump you'll be able to tell how much and when exactly, to sort out your basals on the pump.

I spent ages trying to understand the biochemical aspect of this once. there's a thread here somewhere about that, too: a few people gave me some really good links. Yes our bodies can 'burn' protein to make carbs when it's 'hungry' but it doesn't think: 'oh look here comes some protein with no carbs attached let's burn the protein instead.' It doesn't start to 'burn' protein til it's hungry, and then it uses stored protein, not the protein that has just come in.

But then I was reviewing all this with a massive bias in my head because I don't think protein makes a difference for me: and other people definitely swear blind that it does. There are lots of hidden carbs in some cheap sausages, but even people who know this....

Thanks all for your replies it has been very helpful. I found it extremely mind boggling some of the things said on the course. It frustrated me somewhat🙂

Interestimg that protein affects people in different ways. I eat mountains of fiish at times a have no ill effects. Whole chicken 😱 No bother
