I have avoided scratchings and crackling since they started breaking bits of my poor old teeth :( Tuns out to be way too expensive a snack 😱

Nothing wrong with pork crackling as a snack provided you aren't eating many carbs in the day. As long as you're metabolising the fat, it's not a problem at all. It's certainly a far healthier option compared to crisps.

I actually snack on pork scratchings when I'm trying to lose weight - I do zero carb days so I have minimal insulin circulating and thus, minimal ability to store fat and maximum ability to metabolise it. Plus, fat drives satiety so you would probably find you would actually end up eating less - if I eat half a bag of scratchings, I tend not to need to eat for another 7-8 hours and I don't even feel hungry.

Fat is only a problem when you combine it with a carbohydrate, which is why chips, sausage rolls and pizza cause weight gain. And of course, mixing these things with something like juice is a complete waistline and BG killer.

Wonderful! so next time I go past my butcher I will grab some piggy treats!!!
Crackling!! :D ha ha im so stupid 🙄😛

Alan I just remembered that you can buy pork scratchings that are not hard at all they have been blown up in size and are very fluffy and not hard at all, they sell them in asda, my in-laws love them as they cannot eat the normal ones as they are to hard 🙂

I have a few snack ideas for when I feel hungry, especially in the evening. Usually it is a desire for a certain taste or texture. I always keep packs of thin wholegrain rye crispbreads with sesame seeds in the house. I get mine from Lidl. They are very light and crunchy. Sometimes I spread a thin sardine paste on them, at other times very thinly sliced cheese with very thinly sliced pickled onion. You can have three or four of these without overdoing the calories and wholegrain rye won't bother most diabetics.

If I am fancying fruit, I will take a humble apple, or pear, or both and I have a favourite penknife and wooden board. I'll sit there slcing it and cutting out the core and, by 'making a meal' of it, it somehow is more satisfying than holding it in one hand and chomping on it.

Ice cold fizzy water fills, with a slice of lemon. Better still, zero cal supermarket lemonade but with the juice of a freshly squeezed lemon in it. Fills you and sets your taste buds dancing.

A single slice of pumpernickel is filling, with a coulpe of slices of pepper salami or a single slice of dutch cheese. Have a pickled gerkhin with it or pickled chillis.

Or a tomato salad. Thinly sliced tomato mixed with thing sliced red oinion and then drizzled with a bit of oil and a bit of balsamic vinegar. Or thinly sliced cucumber with a little bit of oil, wine vinegar and dill:

You will get the munchies in the future so it is best to be prepared and have stuff in. The act of preparing food dampens the hunger pangs and taking time over preparation and eating helps a lot too.

Thanks for all these tips on snack will try them, anything to stay away from the kitchen in the evening.
:D

Nice and cheap!🙂 I hate are butcher he makes his own pork scratching ....and there in HUGE bags!!! I just want them but I just look and drool! 🙄
Pork Scratchings are about the only thing I can eat without insulin! They are practically carb free! Go on, enjoy them!

Beware those, read the packet before eating, some have wheat in them and they WILL raise BGs. I found out the hard way.

Most continental slicing sausages avoid the use of starchy fillers, especially sausages from germany where they adopt a simple, animals are for sausages, wheat is for bread and cakes type policy. The only downside is that they can contain a lot of fat.

Fish, now who can that harm?

mmmmm Matjes!

Pork scratchings, pepperami and matjes herrings are all very high in salt folks! Everyone should be keeping their salt intake below 6g per day, and it's especially important for people with diabetes to protect kidneys.

If you say so Hobie 🙂

I've a feeling this foodie thread is going to run and run.....

Watch out that some brands of nuts contain more salt then scratchings, also that the plain salted nuts usually have less salt then some of the flavoured types.

...and yes, I am that person that goes studying the writing on the back of packets of nuts :D
