I am a newly diagnosed type 1, about 1.5 months. I am on novorapid insulin and levemir insulin (fast acting and background). I'm after some advice on snacking. What and how can I snack without it changing my blood sugar levels too much? Do snacks always have to be under 10g of carbs or can I have something with a bit more than that? any advice much appreciated
thanks!!

I tend to have... boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, omelette, roast chicken slices, roast turkey slices, cheese and a personal favourite, salt and vinegar jumbo peanuts. Of course all this is in moderation.... and not all at once ;D

Edit: Sometimes a square or two of Mackies 70% dark chocolate with Scottish mint which is only about 2g per square!

Another edit: if you fancy something with a cuppa or a coffee Mcvities thins are only 4g and I’d think that shouldn’t spike your sugars too badly.

There's shedloads of things without carbs you can have - just not stodge.

In time once you've settled into things more - you will actually be taught to handle a bit more if you need it - but just now it's a bit soon to start adding unnecessary complications like insulin dose stacking to the picture. Talk to your team about wanting slightly more at mealtimes - and protein ifs FAR more filling than straight stodgy carbs anyway. A cream cracker with butter and a good lump of cheese?

In terms of having a healthy snack in between meals or just before I quite often peel a carrot and eat that raw. Cucumbers cut into slices to dip into self made houmous or gucamole. Even frozen peas from time to time. In moderation this would rarely change my levels at all.

Hiya HannahVictoria. 🙂 All great suggestions so far.

Even a salad or a cup of Rooibos tea (no milk) makes my BG go up, so no advice from me. Just wanted to say 'hi'. 😛

Where did you find this? Sounds delicious 🙂 x

Carby snacks can be done (with additional insulin) but as @trophywench suggests these can add more complication and possibility for error and frustration than enjoyment from the snack itself.

I tend to rely on a handful of nuts as my nibble of choice. As long as you don’t have too many, I find I don’t need todose for them 🙂

Normally find it in Sainsbury’s and quite often on special for £1. Then it just makes sense to buy 2 or 3.... :D
Damn I don't have a Sainsbury's! Lol, worst thing is I'm in Scotland and I've not once seen it! x

Unless I'm taking insulin to cover it, fending off an impending hypo, or about to exercise, I don't have snacks with more than 5g carbs so would eat nuts, seeds or cheese if peckish. Carrot sticks, celery etc are great if you're wanting to lose weight but I suspect that isn't the case if you're newly diagnosed, and they don't really fill you up. I'm vegetarian though so there are other things you might want to have.

Hello HannahVictoria, welcome to the forum. 🙂
