I would agree with Amanda, Mike, and Vince that smart meters are just not tried enough technology yet - people who have them have reported bills going up rather than down, there are potential health risks which haven't been sufficiently well researched, and they are ridiculously insecure, far too easy to hack. We have the legal right to refuse a smart meter (though if your meter needs to be replaced because it's too old, it's best not to refuse a new meter altogether, just ask them to install a dumb meter).
So while I think it is discriminatory to refuse to install a meter because of the insulin in the fridge (it's your diabetes, it's up to you to know whether that's a risk, it's your decision) I also think there's a good chance they've saved you money and hassle and a slight chance they've saved you future health problems by refusing to install one!
