Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
As I've just said on the Newbie board, I've been Type 1 for over 30 years, now suffering from neuropathy - but it seems a bit different from what appears whenever you google it. I don't have pain (lucky) and my feet aren't numb. I can feel them fine. Though my brain isn't sure where they are exactly, so I have balance and walking problems. And my right leg in particular is stiff and awkward with a tendency to stick to the ground. I generally use 2 sticks except at home, and have just got a 4-wheeled walker which is useful. My query is - does anyone know how common my type is? And is there anywhere a forum where sufferers can contact each other and discuss approaches to - well, anything really - treatment, exercise and especially coping with the mobility problems?

Hi again John 🙂 We do have a few members with mobility problems and I do remember reading about something similar in the past from another member, although I'm not sure if they still read the forum as it was a while ago.

How long have you been experiencing the problem? Are you on any medication for it? It sounds similar to foot drop syndrome, which can have various causes, diabetic neuropathy being one of them:

Does that match what you are experiencing?

That sounds very like it (fellow) Northerner. My toes are a bit distorted, which can lead to discomfort, and of course increases the balance problem. I've been really aware of the neuropathy for about two years though in retrospect I had symptoms s a few years before that. The foot drop, if that's what it is, I became aware of maybe 18 months ago. I have no medication - I'm told the only treatment for the neuropathy is to maintain good diabetic control, together with exercise recommended by a physiotherapist. Which I'm doing, but over the last 3 months that hasn't stopped it getting worse much more quickly. Anyway, I'm seeing the physio on Wed and will ask her about foot drop. I've been wondering about some form of orthotic as it happens.
Many thanks for your help.
