Hi good folks!
I have been prescribed Sertraline while various tests are made to find out what's causing a whole slew of other problems and I read in the leaflet that it can affect blood glucose levels in diabetic patients. It didn't say how it affected, though after being on for just three days my blood sugars soar after a meal. I have been adjusting my bolus to try and compensate and they are returning to somewhere near normal before the next meal, but I am being alarmed at seeing double figures, especially since this mini-heat wave we're having now where usually my numbers drop alarmingly. (past three days it's reached 27.8 in my non-air-conditioned office).

I was just wondering if anyone else has had experience of this medication and how it affected them.

Ta very much
Jim 🙂

I have taken Sertraline, Jim, but I didn't find that it affected my blood sugar. I had to stop it after epileptic fits on two consecutive nights, waking up on the floor. I was hypo at the time, but not severely. That's in the side effect list as well, but that's not a new condition.

Make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids this weather, fluid loss sticks your BG up.

Wow you did have a rough time! (I deliberately didn't read the side effect list this time!)
I am drinking loads, peeing loads and if I were to try and consume any more water I'd need to be plumbed in like the washing machine lol!

Hi on both to. I'm on 100mg of setraline and have had no issues personally

Thanks Steff. I was told the side effects are very minimal and they seem to be working in the manner they're supposed to. Maybe it is the weather!

Yeah definitely can't discount this current heatwave we are having jim. Hope it sorts itself out soon

Just an idea Jim, but do you need to change your insulin? It might be worth trying a new cartridge / pen in case your insulin has got too warm and so isn't being as effective. Worth ruling it out anyway. Have you been taught how to do correction doses?

My sugars seem to have settled down again, so perhaps it was just a while for my body to get used to the new drug. Insulin has been kept cool (I keep it in my lunch bag when at work and in the fridge when at home and it's really warm). I've only done correction doses at the following meal as they haven't been high enough to warrant a separate dose. I double the dose of Sertraline on Wednesday so I will keep an eye on how I do from then 🙂

Glad things have settled down @JimBear. Let us know how you get on after the dose increase.🙂

The weather is a significant factor here. My blood sugars go up and down like a yo-yo when it gets hot. Holidays abroad can be a real PITA!
