Hello, I have noticed a few people mentioning seeds, chia etc, and just wondered what people recommend, how they like to use them, and what benefits they feel they have? I've Googled chia and they sound beneficial, and also read that you can use them to thicken soups etc, has anyone tried that? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

You can also use them to make a sort of jam, using just fruit and seeds - the seeds absorb water.
You need to be careful with whole seeds in particular as they absorb water and swell up so can be uncomfortable if you eat them dry and they swell in your stomach.
I usually just blend some of the soup and add it back to the rest as that thickens it enough for me. I like soup with chunks.

Thanks for the tips Drummer. I'll get some and experiment.

I sprinkle chia seeds on my Weetabix but that's all I use them for. They are included in what one health website describes as "The 16 Best Foods For Controlling Diabetes".
I'll definitely get some then! I'm now going to have a look for what the other 15 are. Thanks Anitram.

Well some would dispute the beans on the that list. Strawberries for me are a problem can i can only eat about 4.

Seeds are a great source of fibre and when you cut grain products out of your diet, you often find that you suffer constipation because of the sudden loss of fibre from the grains, so increasing your seeds is a good way of increasing fibre without the carbs. They are also a source of protein and healthy fats. Chia I believe, have one of the highest rates of Omega 3 fatty acids of any food, so well worth using.

On a morning I have a glass of water with a splash of ACV or balsamic and a splash of diet cola just because I like the taste combination and it flavours the water and I feel it helps to start the day with a little acid. I add a teaspoon of psyllium husk and a teaspoon of chia seeds mixed into it and drink it down once it starts to go gelatinous, then follow it with a glass of water, then I have a dessert spoon of Alesto Seed Mix from Lidl (mix of sunflower, pumpkin, hemp and golden linseed) with my yoghurt and berries and sprinkle of granola for breakfast. That is my daily dose of seeds.

Without wishing to provide too much information, my digestive movement/routine is so much improved since I adopted this breakfast regime and that makes me feel fitter and healthier in itself.

Gordon Bennett! I start my day with 5 tablets and bottled flavoured aerated water - not sposed to eat or drink anything else (though mainly dairy) for at the very least half an hour, else the Thyroxine won't work properly.

Thank you Barbara - I appreciate your advice, and 'without wishing to provide too much information' that's why I was asking!

I sprinkle mixed seeds on my morning bowl of soya yogurt and fruit, for the fibre content (slows down digestion, apparently). I used to make “chia pudding” - mix water and teaspoon of chia seeds, then stand back and watch the “pudding” take form. o_O It’s magic!

Does slow it down, big fan of seeds once but not so much now, found they caused bowel upset.

Pumpkin seed oil is good & healthy alternative to raw seeds, good for heart health among others.

Sounds a bit astronautical.

I’ve got chia seeds in the cupboard, but I rarely remember they are there to use them!

Must break them out again 🙂

The flavoured water is my take on the medical advice to take with water, I don't like plain tap water thanks. (Needs at least a teabag and a drop of milk to make it palatable! On the once on a blue moon we run out of flavoured, well I have to drink it with the tabs and so have done - just not by choice,)
