I had my review yesterday and I am not sure how I feel about the results.

So my HbA1c was 52, which is quite a bit higher than I had hoped. I told my consultant that I was not happy with that, but he told me he was really pleased. He looked at my Libre data and saw that hypos are rare, which he thought was fabulous. When I told him that 52 is not the low 40s that I strive for, his argument was that these are difficult times and he can only imagine the stress I have been under as a teacher during the pandemic on top of having a young daughter who hasn't been sleeping well at all over the past few months. Everything else was good; kidney function, cholesterol at 3.3...

So even though he was really positive, I am still somewhat disappointed with myself.

Don't beat yourself up - that's a good result! Your consultant was right - I think it's easy to underestimate the stress that the pandemic has caused everyone, and especially people in essential jobs like yours. Be disappointed if you must, but NOT with yourself.

That cholesterol is fab! 🙂

Please make yourself a massive medal. You deserve it. I have shouted at the radio when they were saying things like ’The schools are reopening’ when I was well aware that teachers have been managing BOTH the online learning as well as the classes of the children of key workers. So thank you for all that you have done through all this.

Oh yes and then you are managing your diabetes too and helping your young daughter.
Listen to your consultant. They are right. Your results are fantastic with all that you have been doing.
Be proud and cut yourself some slack, and now enjoy the summer BREAK and make sure that you take a break.

Thank you and well done.

Sorry to hear you are disappointed @Ivostas66

I fully recognise the feeling of disappointment when a (very good) A1c result isn’t quite what you had hoped for.

Don‘t underestimate the positive impact on your overall health of very few hypos. Often we can strive for low numbers, and a low A1c because we’ve heard that this reduces our risk of ‘long-term complications’ and it’s easy to forget how potentially dangerous and debilitating a long-term complication mild and moderate hypoglycaemia can be.

52mmol/L (6.9%) is nothing to be sniffed at, and not so long ago would have been more than 0.5% below the recommended level.

Hope your disappointment eases swiftly, and you can continue to maintain fairly even BGs over future months

I'm not 'proud' of my usual A1c for donkeys years at 52/3/4 - however I am very pleased that so far it hasn't resulted in any 'diabetes complications'. Perhaps they'll all descend on me suddenly in one fell swoop one day? Or not? who knows? I don't!

Thank you all for your supportive comments. I think part of my reaction is linked to negative comments made by my GP a couple of years ago when I had a similar HbA1c result. He said he was not happy and asked if I had overindulged that Christmas "Too much Christmas pudding and alcohol was it?" were his words.

Anyway, after a space of a few days, I am quite pleased with things, given the difficulties faced over the past year or so.
