Retinopathy

Here in North East I have 2 year eye check and foot check Type 1
You go to 2 yearly screening if you have been all clear for the previous couple of years I believe. If you get a background retinopathy (R1) or worse then you will revert to yearly screening or more frequent still if more serious damage is discovered. I think there is a national move to 2 yearly screening (NICE guidance) for those who get the all clear, so not just here in the north east.

Thanks for your reply. What about numb toes would that be 2 year if so not too good for Type 1 late onset too.

Foot checks should be part of your annual diabetes review and consist of your foot/ankle pulse being checked and a sensitivity test where they touch your feet with a fine filament to see if you can feel it.
Who does you annual review? It is a nurse at my GP practice, but others get their review at the hospital diabetes clinic I believe.
If you are not getting an annual review or no-one has checked your feet, then chase it up with whoever does your annual review.
As a person with diabetes it is also your responsibility to keep a close eye on your feet and look after them as well as you can and seek medical advice if you have a problem, so you need to make an appointment with your GP and have the numbness checked out.

Stimulating blood flow in your feet is important which is why walking can be so beneficial for us, particularly as we get older or any other exercise if walking is difficult/not possible. Sitting still a lot is one of the worst things for our feet, so if you have limited mobility try to do "exercise snacks" where you spend 5-10 mins every hour or two moving your feet like tapping them to music if you like. Blood flow is really important for helping to keep nerves heathy as is a healthy diet. Vitamin B12 is important for nerve health. I hope you are able to take some steps to regain some of the feeling in your feet. Nerves can effect some repair themselves with improved blood flow and diet and good diabetes management.
