Hi,

I've just phoned my surgery to ask for my HbA1c results and been told that they are 60.0. I've converted this to the old measurement and I think this would be about 7.6%.

I'm not seeing my DSN until October now and wondered what the HbA1c should be? How much harder do I need to work and how much lower should they be? I think I read somewhere that they should be between 6.5% and 7.5% but just wanted to double check this.

I've only been taking my diabetes seriously since the beginning of August so if the above is correct then I'm extremely happy and know that I can definitely get my next results lower.

That's really good for the first serious attempt Heather. Well done.🙂

Just to add to what Alan said, there is a perceptible improvement with every % point that you come down. The key is to now avoid the extreme highs and lows and try to tighten your grip on the magic 4-8ish 🙂rolleyes🙂 and you'll be there next time.

Just don't beat yourself up if you find it hard to acheive. You're in the right ball park.

Thanks guys, I thought it was too good to be true. I'll book to have some more bloods done in December and make that my next goal.

Well done on a good first A1c Heather. You are running at what consultants have previously told me is 'just a little bit high'

There's an often shown graph which suggests increase in likelihood of developing complications plotted agains reducing A1c.

(this one is not a very well drawn example)

Essentially it gets better and better the lower you can creep below 7 and begins to get dramatically worse (long term) above 8 or 9. Medical opinion appears to differ as to whether the improvement in the low 6's in worth the increased likelihood of hypoglycaemia for a T1, but if you can get there without any/many hypos then the stats say you should stand a better chance of going complication-free long term.

Does this chart help? It only refers to retinopathy but I think all complications fall into line with it.

7.6 is not at all bad if you've only just started working on being in control. Well done.

Hi that's pretty good Heather, I think we all strive for a lower BS and your positive attitude is really good. Take care and best wishes Sheena

That's a great chart Patti, very interesting (although a bit scary) to see it laid out in percentage terms over time

To say you've only been trying since last month, that result is brilliant. I'm sure you'll get it even lower by your next check up. Well done! Onward and downward. XXXXX
