You may remember my first post at the beginning of January when my HbA1c came back as 56...NICE guidelines state repeat test within 4 weeks and if the second result is 48 or over diagnosis of T2 will be confirmed..the bossy nurse told me I wouldn’t be able to lower my HbA1c in that time but I cut carbs back to under 70g per day and managed to lose 1.5 stone before my repeat test today...just logged on and my result was in...I did lower it, but not by quite enough..it came back as 48...I’m a little bit gutted...if 47 I would have had a little ammunition with regards to them marking my medical records as T2...I’m awaiting a phone call from said bossy, patronising nurse...probably tomorrow...I know many would say that 2 tests before confirmation is gold standard these days but I had no symptoms (and still don’t) and that is what NICE guidelines say...I minded to say well Lab results often have a degree of error and i’m not happy with my medical records being marked as T2 without a third test...am I just clutching at straws?

I was declared Diabetic after 1 test so i think 2 is indeed Gold standard these days and can't see them agreeing to third test. Just keep doing what you have been and aim for remission. Well done for you efforts so far.

I quoted NICE guidelines at her because she wound me up by patronising me when she rang the first time, she couldn’t really argue with them....I really don’t want it on my medical records...I’m sure the first test was wrong...second one is saying borderline...I guess I’ll see what she says when she rings and keep everything crossed it’s the nice nurse this time

Good luck. Please come back and tell us the outcome

Will do..I’m determined to not take this lying down...there Is always room for discrepancies in HbA1c tests and as the second one clearly shows borderline as opposed to abnormal (which the first one shows) then I think I should put up a bit of a fight!

@MrsAA You've done a great job! I understand your frustration. Can't hurt to try and argue your case but work towards lowering your HbA1c regardless.

I will definitely keep to the lower carb way from now on...I’m sure I won’t get anywhere with the bossy nurse but I feel I have to at least try....

Well 47 isn't even normal, anything over 42 shows quite clearly that you have an intolerance to carbohydrates, As long as you have living red blood cells that were alive before you started low carbing (and their lifespan is between 90 & 120 days on average) then they will continue to affect your HbA1c result.

Why do you have such a marked dislike of T2?

You can't see diabetes, it always creeps up on you. It does not usually have violent symptoms - shedloads of folk have had it for years without knowing until they have a blood test for summat else, trouble is by then some of the damage D can cause to the body, may already have taken hold,

Get TYPE 2 written in great big letters on your medical record, I should - ONLY that way will they do things like check the backs of your eyes for retinopathy and your feet for neuropathy damage.

Congratulatins on your terrific A1c reduction in just a few weeks @MrsAA

Sorry to hear you have a difficult relationship with one of the members of staff at your practice. Is there any way you can request to see the other nurse as a matter of course going forward - having a supportive relationship with your HCPs is very important!

Well done on your result. If you reduced by that much in 4 weeks then it’s likely to be lower next time if you continue with your low carb.
With a diagnosis you would have your eyes checked. As I reduced my HbA1c to the prediabetes level by my 2nd blood test, I didn’t get the eye check and it does worry me that I may have done some damage to my eyes but can’t find out. You would also get free eye tests, feet checked etc?

Well done and good luck. 🙂
