At risk of diabetes
hi i brought a test kit of amazon and just did my first test and got a reading of 5.0mmol its been about a hour since i had something to eat. ill admit it was a peice of cake. just wondering if this result is normal or not.

Very good yes

For true readings, test before food and 2 hours after food each meal, it all depends what you eat, the blood glucose goes up and down after each meal and day to day. Also test first thing in the morning and last thing at night and just start recording, so you get an idea what's happening.

I would test after 2 hrs in case your levels have gone up a bit , but 5.0 is great.

I don’t know if you have already read this , apologies if you have

Though it doesn’t say in this link, it is best to Test directly before eating too, that way you know by how much your BG has gone up , ie if say you were actually 8.5 before eating but did not test , and two hrs later you were 10.0 you would assume that that meal was not suitable, when in fact it was, it was just that your starting level was too high

will do thank you for the help!. whats a "normal" reading for just before bed and in the morning ? sorry for all the questions iv not a clue about any of it lol.

Who knows I don't know of any non diabetic who test :D ha ha. I think someone mentioned to me norm BG is between 4 and 7 mmol after food, but perhaps someone else will come along with more accurate information. the average HbA1c is the one that indicates what the levels are over 2-3 months and diabetes diagnose then if the average is over 6.2 I think, but again others may know more about that too.

Hi and welcome

Healthy individuals would have a fasting BG between 4 and 5.4 and two hours after a meal their BG should be below 7.8, so your 5.0 is a result in the normal range for someone who doesn't have diabetes.

Could I ask why you've been told you're at risk? Only answer if you want to.

Martin
yeah no worries. as i said above i felt like i had some symptoms. i did read them off google which i know you should never do for medical advice lol. the reason why i feel im at risk is im pretty over weight. i did have high blood pressure but managed to get that down with dieting. just a better safe than sorry sort of thought for it.

so i just tested again as its been probably 2 hours after eatting. and its. 7.0mmol so thats good thanks for help everyone!

If you don’t mind me asking, what symptoms did you have.

Hi, Lin
Are you, like me, puzzled by this?

Symptoms of being at risk of diabetes? I don't get that. Lifestyle issues yes, but I wouldn't describe those as symptoms.

Martin
Not really , I think Jay believes he is at risk because of weight / lifestyle rather than diagnosed as at risk, I could very well be wrong though, In either case all the changes we make as diabetics are great for non diabetics too.
I think diet has changed so much since I was a child in the early 50s, we didn’t rely so much on high carb foods and dinner plates were half the size I see in the shops now

I'm a child of the 50's as well - the days of rickets, diphtheria, polio, earth closets, and loads of other stuff that todays generation will not have to endure.

"If them were the good old days, then bugger them" .... is what my gran used to say, but she was speaking in the 50's about the 30's.

I daily give silent thanks I was born in 1960 and not in some earlier time.

From what I remember my biggest meal was my school dinner! Hahaha! Anyway good on you Jay for taking responsibility for your health. But, if you're feeling odd then do go get checked out at your doctors.

If you have just come to the conclusion you are at risk yourself, it might be better going to see your GP to discuss your concerns.

Oh yes indeed, the clean air of the 1950's ……. where did all that smog come from then; could all the foundries and drop-forging plants surrounding our house perchance have contributed? Or maybe Midland Tar Distillers just up the road from the Jensen factory going up in flames one night caused it all? Not to mention the coal mining with the pit falls etc or the blasting at the quarry 'up' Rowley ….. Or of course the coal fires in every single house in every single street (how the hell else could anyone have got their washing dry?) or the only trains we had when I was a child - steam ones fired by coal.

There was also in the 1950's a thing passed by Parliament called the Clean Air Act. It took MANY years to eventually take full effect in industrial areas. Why the heck would they have needed that, if the air was already clean?

Nice rant Jenny but sadly true.
