I've had my earlier question nicely answered and now I have a second.

It's about BG spikes. I understand that we aim to keep BG spikes as small as possible and within a target of 7 or 8 mmol/l.
If it does happen to spike up to 10 for a short time and within 60 minutes is back down to 7 or so, and over the course of the same 24 hours my BG averages less than 6, what is the harm caused to the body by that short spike?

Minimal to none, but if you are eating enough carbs to do that on a regular basis then you may find that your baseline BG levels slowly creeping back up ie. you stop returning to 7 but gradually it might be 7.5 or 8 and gradually your numbers creep upwards and drag your average with them because your body can't cope with that level of carbs on a sustained basis.

Thanks Barbara, that's interesting. Is this due to glycation on red blood cells?

I think it may be more to do with insulin resistance but I am no expert.
