Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi all, I have just been diagnosed as prediabetic at HbA1C of 46. My aim is to lower my blood sugar levels to below 42, into normal levels. I am in my early 70's. I am following the low-carb diet, not finding it too hard at the moment and would welcome any tips, many thanks.

Hello @Gwenny, welcome to the forum. It does get easier , promise ! You just need time to get over the shock the right info and support, we here are very good at the last two. So ask all the questions you need to, we will be only to happy to help.

Being diagnosed (dx) with pre diabetes means you stand a very good chance of knocking it into touch 🙂.

Many of us here feel the recipes over on the main site are far to high in carbs, however we have some very good innovative cooks on here , I am sure you will be surprised at what they can do with a almond flour and a bit of imagination, you’ll even find a version of pizza in the
recipes .

You might want to have a look at this long running thread
what-did-you-eat-yesterday where you will find our halos sometimes slip down round our ankles as well as shine brightly .

Is their anything in particular you need some help with or info ?

Thanks Lin, this is all a bit of a minefield at the moment, but I know I am fortunate to have been given this warning. It is reasuring to know I can turn to the forum for help, thank you.

Hopefully you will be offered a diabetes prevention course, which should help you .
There ate some very informative links on here ,though none are specifically for pre diabetes but you will find them very helpful.

I suggest you start with Maggie Davies letter in the T2 section.

If you decide you want to self test to see how the various carbohydrates affect you , it is extremely unlikely you will be provided with a glucose meter and test strips
The SD Codefree meter is the cheapest one we know of to self fund the ongoing cost of the testing strips
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Codefree-Glucose-Monitor-Monitoring-Testing/dp/B0068JAJFS/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=drugstore&ie=UTF8&qid=1506485682&sr=1-1&keywords=sd+codefree+meter+mmol/l&linkCode=sl1&tag=xfm-21&linkId=f39210144fdc26c27738e45b6d957003&th=1
They only provide 10 strips and lancets do you need to buy more.

Thank you Ljc, I will certainly look at the links you refer to and the SD Codefree meter.
