Relationship to Diabetes
Hi, I am Sallyed. I received a letter from my GP saying that my HbA1c test shows that I could be pre-diabetic. I am trying to have a low carb diet and would like to have hints on food swaps, recipes etc. I struggle thinking of a bedtime snack without reverting to the cabs as I cannot go to bed feeling hungry or I don't sleep. I don't have a huge supper but like to just have a small snack, ideas would be very welcome. I also could do with hints on what to exchange for capsicum peppers, chillies etc and avocados as I do not eat either as they upset my stomach
My husband was diagnosed last year with borderline diabetes and with our diet we have managed to get him back to pre-diabetes. (It doesn't seem to have had the same effect on me!!!) I do try to keep my helpings small and have taken to using a smaller plate!

Welcome to the Forum Sallyed. I am pre-diabetic too. I did get out of it but, unfortunately, it has gone back up again so am battling on. I was told by my GP to cut down on the 6-7 pieces of fruit a day I was eating and to have no more than 3. Diabetes prevention then said 2. I came here and found out my diet that I thought was healthy was a disaster.

Most people here feel berries are the best ones. some can tolerate apples, some cannot. It seems to be oranges, pineapple and bananas that are the worst. Starchy carbs like breakfast cereal, pasta, rice, potatoes, bread are the ones to cut out or cut down on. Many posters here like Burgen Soya and Linseed.

It is a good idea to test to see what foods you can tolerate. The recommendation here seems to be the SD Codefree as the strips are cheaper. I got mine from Amazon.

A lot of people here do high fat low carb with the emphasis on good fat like olive oil, rapeseed oil, oily fish, nuts, seeds etc. Many believe it is best to eat full fat rather than low fat as a lot of low fat food has sugar added to it to make it more tasty.

There are some recipes in the recipes section which you may like to look at if you like cooking. Another good thread is "What did you eat today" where posters say what they have eaten.

Other posters will be along with much more knowledge and experience than I have but hope this will be a start for you.

You might like to have a look at Michael Moseley's "Blood Sugar Diet" and "Blood Sugar Diet Recipes." Dr David Cavan's "Reverse your Diabetes" - he is not suggesting everyone can do this, he means getting better control. There are some lovely recipes in it.

I am sure Bubbsie will be along with some suggestions for books and blogs to read as will Northerner with plenty of advice.

You are certainly in the right place and will get plenty of help and advice here.

Hello @Sallyed , welcome to the forum.
What bedtime snacks would you prefer to have.

Here is a link to the threads and the SD Codefree that @Maz2 mentioned
recipes

what-did-you-eat-yesterday.

We do recommend testing on here to see how the various carbohydrates affect us as we are all different in this, eg some people can eat porridge others need to avoid it like the plague.
Have a read of this blog, test-review-adjust by Alan S

Sadly it very unlikely your gp practice will provide you with a glucose meter and testing strips, but do ask them
This is one of the cheapest ones etc self fund that we know of
sd+codefree+meter+mmol/l

Their is a book you might be interested in
It’s by Gretchen Becker, who has T2 herself , so she understand it from the inside 🙂

Ask as many questions as you need to, we’ll do our best to help.

Welcome to the forum Sallyed. Great that you are looking at your diet.
As others have said we are all different and it may be that testing your BG
will help you to find out what works for you.

As others have said there are a lot of ideas included the food section on here.
Well worth a look.

Hi Sallyed, like you I like a little something before I go to bed, my ‘go to’ favourites are either sugar free Jelly or full fat Greek yoghurt with a splash of sugar free caramel 😛

thanks, I do love Greek Yogurt full fat, (I hate the 0% fat, it tastes of nothing,)so I try to have only about 100g instead of the usual 125 to 150 g helping just to cut down on the calories mainly. My worst things are anything to do with capsicums which includes all the paparika, red, green, yellow peppers, chillies, cayenne etc as they really (and I mean really) upsed my sustem and they seem to be in nearly every recipe I lookat!!! Also avodados which are too rich for me and make me sick, so I woud love suggestions of substitutes for those things.

Have you tried mustard as a seasoning? So many different kinds from Dijon to whole Grain? My staple veg go to’s are asparagus, courgette, Chinese cabbage (and every other kind), cauliflower & broccoli (especially in a cheese sauce)

Do find broccoli bland so may try that in cheese sauce.
Low carb cheese sauce, I learned from here. A little milk warmed in the microwave with a good spoon of cream cheese & a little grated cheddar along with a bit of Dijon mustard, mix it all together.....yummy 😛

I eat a low carb diet and only eat twice a day as I am not hungry - it is the carbs which fuel hunger and snacking.
