Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi all, I am new to this forum and have just introduced myself on the newbie's page but thought I would raise my question here too ( hope that is ok). Shocked today , as a result of routine blood test gp said I was pre diabetic. I just took the " are you at risk " questionnaire on this site and the result came out at low risk...so slightly confused and concerned. I am in the middle of recommended weight range, don't smoke, abstinent from alcohol for 7 years, no family history, waist size ok. I run 5k 3 times a week, walk long distance trails and do yoga every day. I have a really healthy diet. Except my one treat is a bar of chocolate each day. Will I have to give that up ? I can't think of anything else I do/don't do right. Any advice welcome

Hi and welcome to the forum 🙂 it’s difficy to know why you might be considered prediabetic but it’s not always due to being overweight or unfit, some people are just unfortunate to develop it, it might be linked to family history (I have it on both sides) and sometimes it can be random. It’s great that you have such an active lifestyle, maybe you could consider reducing your carbohydrates to see how that works for you. Carbohydrates are the culprits for raising our blood sugars as well as the obvious sugary foods. Potatoes, rice, pasta and bread are the worst ones. Have a good read of the posts on here and then ask any questions you have 😉

Aye, just carry on doing what you are doing. Quite a few thin healthy folk get T2, it’s not just lifestyle. You may or may not go on to develop it, but it isn’t your fault, for sure.

Hi, welcome to the forum. You certainly seem to be doing all the right things. While type 2 usually develops as a result of lifestyle, this isn’t always the case. There are other factors as well, age, family history, ethnicity and high blood pressure being some of them. You’d have to speak to your doctor to establish why he said you are pre-diabetic, but sometimes it’s down to sheer bad luck.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I sort of felt really guilty that it showed up. I have been very tired recently, that is my only symptom. I will cut back a bit on the carbs ( don't like um much anyway!) And see if that helps. I dont really want to lose weight though. I have no family history of if but did drink alcohol heavily until seven years ago so maybe it is payback for that !

If you don’t want to lose weight then as you reduce the carbs, increase your good fats, nuts, avocado etc...

You are the type who disproves the commonly held belief that type tow diabetes is all down to bad behaviour - you will probably get asked how much weight you had to lose in order to reverse your diabetes at some time.
As far as I can work out it is all about the carbs in a modern diet.
We are told it is healthy - but then we get diabetes, so how can it be? Perhaps changing your daily chocolate bar to half a one, and of high cocoa chocolate, would be an idea, but a general reduction in carbohydrate would be a good idea for someone who doesn't deal well with carbohydrate.

Thank you for your replies. Yes, have started cutting down on the carbs already. I think I was bought up with the low fat approach to diet and the additional sugar that often seems to go with that. I have never eaten much and with the exercise that has kept my weight low. Actually I honestly hate potatoes and forced myself to eat them, (i am of that generation that was forced to sit at the table and not allowed to leave until they were all eaten up!). I don't really like rice and can take bread or leave it. I only ate them because I always thought they were a major part of a balanced diet! Hey ho...... I really hope that it has been caught early enough and by making these changes it will do the trick. Thank you once again for the helpful replies and this site...... Just a further thought though..... The NHS site said I was low risk - should that not be updated in some way?

Yes, but therefore it might help if they explained that in some way, or added a few more questions in. If you do the quiz and get low risk you tend to discount it (there are four categories). I'm really lucky that a random blood test picked it up because it is something that would never have crossed my mind. I feel quite stigmatised when I thought I was being really healthy
