I have always had porridge for breakfast and when testing my blood sugar it returned approx 6. I was happy with that and I stopped testing. However, i have been experimenting and adding lots of other stuff to the mix, nuts, seeds etc. Today I had a little more time and decided to test and this returned 8.1 , clearly a bit over carby for me. . My posting this is not because I am overly concerned but it shows how important these little machines are in keeping an eye on stuff. To think the GP responsible for diabetics in the clinic told me not to test... huh? What does she know...

It's the only way! x

Agreed with all comments but I need to be a little calmer with my massive sprinkling of stuff...

My preference is 30g of porridge made with water, 40g blueberries, some mascarpone and a sprinkling of flaxseed, sunflower, pumpkin and chia seeds and goji berries.
Have you considered a good dusting of cinnamon too or ginger?

I have Oats so simple for breakfast in the winter and I add supermarket frozen berries ( overnight in the fridge defrost) which I enjoy. Spring to autumn I have Special K red berries.

Good morning.
I reduced my over enthusiastic sprinkling of stuff on my porridge and when I tested later on, I received a reward 5.2. Lesson learnt.

Is there a big difference in the 'light sprinkle' measure compared to the 'over enthusiastic sprinkle'?
I actually had more blueberries this morning - 80g rather than 40g. Living life to the full!

Good question. I am afraid to say I simply chucked it all on. No sophisticated measuring took place.

No end to learning...

I started eating oats recently (20g of oats, nuts, chia seeds, yoghurt, 100g of berries, around 25-30g of carbs)

BG goes up a little, then falls back down again quite quickly sometimes. Last time I measured it peaked at around 6.8 and came back down to the 5s shortly after that.

porridge was one of the things that i thought i could handle fine but earlier this year i noticed pre lunch tests slowly going up. it appeared that my tolerance to some things had slowly changed over time.

I still have it sometimes but less often now and just add in an extra lap of the street or an extra few minutes on the walking treadmill.

i dont like the fact that they (drs/nurses) keep telling me i dont need to bother testing. Keep testing and keep making little changes and tweaks to diet.

i think someone on this forum said it --- you wouldn't drive a car without a speedometer to tell you how fast you are going. the meter and testing does a similar job.

I have had to adjust what I can tolerate many times over the years.

I have porridge, 40g oats, 40g blueberries, 25g meridian smooth peanut butter, 5g cacao powder and 20g of a homemade 4 seed and goji berry mixwith 250ml of full fst milk. Love it.

Glad someone else enjoys their morning porridge as I do.
I am pre diabetic so am following a low carb diet but am reluctant to give my morning porridge up. I weigh out 40 grams of oats which are 24 grams of carbs with a few blueberries added. Some say it’s too high in carbs but my thinking is that if I have them for breakfast I can work the carbs off by being active during the day. I am still managing to stay below 100 carbs per day. As I’m told that under 130 grams a day is the way to go.

Ah..porridge...I take mine with blueberries, apple and a generous pinch of cinnamon.
