I decided to do a little test today. I know, when I test normally after eating breakfast I'm back in the low 4's 2hrs after. However, what I didn't know was what my BG was doing in between times.

Breakfast consisted of :-
Porage Oats : 45g.
Nutmeg : sprinkle.
Set Clover Honey : 1 tsp (heaped).
Banana : Fairly ripe medium sized (i.e. not small!).
Semi-Skimmed milk : Didn't record the qty, but not too much.

Orange Juice (oj) : 1 small glass

Anyway, my results were .....

0.5hrs : 7.4mmol/L
1.0hrs : 6.8mmol/L
1.5hrs : 4.2mmol/L
2.0hrs : 4.4mmol/L

Granted, I didn't do a before test, but it wasn't relevant to me if my levels were behaving afterwards.

So my normal low 4's after 2hrs result was confirmed, but it also showed I wasn't getting very high either.

I think I'm quite pleased with that result. But I'd be interested to hear what others thought. 🙂

By the way, please don't take this as me saying that what I had for breakfast is what everyone should have! I am quite sure that, for some (if not most?), it would send them sky-high!! 😱

Pretty good results Andy, although the fact that you were 7.4 after half an hour does suggest a fairly rapid, although not very high, spike - possibly due to the oj. It might be worth repeating it having a cuppa instead of the oj (although I appreciate costly on strips - perhaps just try the half hour test. I would presume that your pre-meal levels are similar to your 2hr post-meal levels, no reason to think they would be sent lower by eating unless you had a bit of an extra surge of insulin caused by the food.)

Thanks for that Alan, my pre-breakfast readings in the past are mostly in the 5's and a few in the 6's but the last couple were in the 4's. I must admit the reason I decided to run the test is because I was wondering about the possibility of an insulin surge, I do suddenly get very hungry around 11:00am (I'm not sure whether the drop between 1 and 1.5 hrs would count a that though).

I think when my orange juice is finished, I'll repeat the test as you suggest to see what happens around the half hour. I'll then go out and get my next pot of test strips for the next 12 months!

Andy 🙂

The spike looks perfectly fine considering you have consumed a fair amount of carbohydrates, even as a type one using insulin I would struggle to achieve such numbers although I wouldn't want to drop into the 4's as I would need to guzzle belly babies🙄

That is really good; I had porridge yesterday (5 tablespoons) and 1% fat milk and my 1hr test was 9.2. 1hr later went down to 6. something. I was told to add fruite/berries/nuts so that it slowed down the spike. Interesting...

Amanda 🙂

They look like excellent results to me Andy.
I still struggle with breakfast and often go from 5.7 to 8's or 9's.
Still working on it - test/adapt!🙂

They are good results Andy, but I do not like porridge, never have, so I just have a small amount of cereal and a yogurt or a small peice of brown toast.
But my BS was 14.2 this morning because my levemir plunger got stuck last night and would not let me administer all of my insulin, so I had to use a new levemir pen, ( and threw the dodgy one away) but the 1st lot obviously did not go in, that's why it was probably so high this morning,BS not normally like that :( Sheena

Looking at my log book, I think it was around 6 months before I was regularly under 6.0mmol/L 2hrs post breakfast. So, on balance, I think your numbers are looking good. 🙂

Yes, for a change I went for raspberries and cranberries rather than banana, but haven't done that for a bit. I might do another test one day with that and see what happens.

Andy 🙂

Fingers crossed for a non-stick plunger and some nice 'in the zone' numbers for a bit!

Sadly, I love my porridge especially if I keep adding different things to it. If I'd had to have it just on its own, I'd soon stop eating it though.

Andy 🙂
