Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I've been very ill since yesterday afternoon and through the night

Started throwing up about 3pm then about 20-30 times during the night

The only thing I can think is that it's something I ate, but it's bloody persistent

I've just made an appointment to speak to a doctor later this morning, so nobody needs to worry about me!

I've had something like this before, and the main problem is that it has pushed my blood sugar levels into double figures, so I need to inject small amounts of insulin to keep it under some sort of control. The problem with that is that if I inject too much and have a low blood sugar, I can't treat it because anything I eat or drink will promptly end up in in the large pyrex bowl I employ for such medical situations 😱 As such, I could continue to drop and fall into a coma :( Too little and the build up of acidic elements in my blood could lead to DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis), which is also a life-threatening condition :(
My ketone levels are currently High, at 4.6. This is largely due to the fact that I haven't eaten or drunk any carbohydrates for many hours (non-diabetic friends may know about the 'ketone diet'. These are normally fine, but you need insulin to clear them from your bloodstream otherwise they can turn your blood highly acidic and risk organ failure :( I had DKA when I was diagnosed and ended up in hospital , so don't want that again! But this time I have insulin. :( My throat is very sore from all the stomach acids I have thrown up :( I'm writing all this so I know not to leave out any details for the doctor, who 'deals' with diabetes, but may not be familiar with Type 1🙂
Watch this space! 🙂

So sorry to hear this! Hope you can start to feel better soon & doctor gets back to you quickly! Sending you (Hugs)! I don’t do hugs very often but, feel you need one!

Good that you can post 🙂 ‘s & here’s another one 🙂 from me! Get well soon!

Get well soon @Northerner . Hope its not long before your doctor rings

Yikes! Sorry to hear you are caught in this conundrum again Northie.

Hope you can take some sugary/carby fluids and keep them down for 10-15 minutes to allow the insulin to work

Sorry to hear you are so poorly @Northerner.
Sugary fluids are taken up pretty quickly so hopefully that will enable you to treat hypos.

If it becomes too difficult this may be a time to let someone help and go to A&E. I have been impressed on my rare visits how quickly things have been managed.

Take care.

Sorry to hear you’re feeling so unwell northerner. Fortunately you’re switched on about these things so keep the doctors right! Hope you’re feeling much better soon. I know you’ll be keen to stay out of hospital just now! 😳

Yes, I know in normal times high ketones and high levels when you can't ingest anything means A&E, but it doesn't feel like an emergency yet 🙂

Sorry you’re so ill. Tummy bugs and similar terrify me - I really hope your vomiting settles soon. For hypos when vomiting, I’ve managed to get my blood sugar up a little by crushing and ‘holding’ a Dextro in my cheek. Honey smeared there can help too.

Fingers crossed you’re over the worst of the vomiting soon. Look after yourself. X

hope you get well soon Northerner. i noticed last year when i had bad vomiting when my BG was tested it was raised and after that they then checked for diabetes which it came back as having. still horrible been sick and i know how the throat feels. glad you are speaking with your doctors but if it gets worse then a+e

Oh dear @Northerner - I remember the last time, you were really poorly. :( Let us know how the appointment went.

So sorry to hear you are so unwell Alan. Do you have a Glucagon pen and if not, perhaps you could suggest that to the doc as a stand by if you are unable to keep anything down orally but as others have said you should get some absorption through your mouth.
Please keep us updated when you can as we will be worrying about you.

Aww bless...yeah over the past few weeks ive been really under the weather...i had my 1st vaccine 2 nd a bit weeks ago and havent felt same since...im due my 2nd vaccine in few days as i work in a carehome...i just hope the 2nd vaccine settles me

Although my sugars have been high ive managed them

I thought Glucogon was for others to administer, as @Northerner lives alone!
It is generally for emergency use by a third party when someone is no longer conscious enough to take glucose orally but no reason why @Northerner couldn't self administer if his levels drop and he is unable to bring them up when he needs to via oral glucose due to persistent vomiting. Better than a trip to A&E.

@Northerner Have you checked the labelling on Capri Sun because we had some given ages ago and I was shocked at how little carbs there were in it at the time. It may be it was a no added sugar variety but considering I thought it was orange juice it was exceptionally low in carbs

Good wishes from me too, @Northerner, I'm sorry to hear you're not well, and do let us know how you get on xxx
