Hi guys,
Today I'm back into a more normal routine after a couple of days of being unhealthy.
As a huge treat last night, hubby and I had a Dominos pizza. It was delicious, and I worked out the carbs correctly and bolused for the correct amount (I'm on Humalog/Lantus)
My BG went up to 13 after dinner, I took a correction and two hours later it was 12. Another correction and it was 11. At this stage, I was going to bed, so I didn't want to take any further corrections and risk a nighttime hypo. I woke in the night from a nightmare😱 so I thought I'd test whilst I was awake and it was 6.8 with a fasting of 7.9 this morning.
I don't plan to have pizza very often, but I was wondering if you guys have any tips for avoiding such long spikes of high BG?
Sorry for the essay!thanks all x

I'm a T2, not insulin or drug dependant in any way, but would comment that pizza seems to be one of the trickier foods for diabetics to tolerate. As a T2, I found I had a slow, but sustained rise and I just decided a bit of dough with some toppings just wasn't worth it.

Even when now "normalised", my bloods go higher than usual (but still non-diabetic), but stay elevated overnightt. I'll just pass.

I have read of T1s working out how and when to bolus for pizza. If I recall for most, it involved adjusting both the amount of insulin taken aboard and the timing of the dose.

Hopefully someone with direct experience will share it with you in due course, but this post will nudge your query up the recent posts list. 🙂

I keep away from pizzas. Much rather have pasta. I bet the corrections were high ?

Thanks for the replies guys 🙂
I usually stick to a low GI diet, so pizza definitely isn't something I will eat often at all.
I've only been taking insulin a few months, so I'm still learning what affects me in which ways!
The corrections were high Hobie, and they didn't seem to have much of an effect!
Still, BGs are back to normal today, and I'm back on my normal diet and exercise routine so I'm sure things will be normal again now 🙂
Hope you've had good Christmases!

I avoid pizza but do miss it at times. Takeaway pizzas seem to be the hardest to manage. Dr Oettkers are easier to work out as all the info is on the back but it's not the same as having one delivered.

I can't do pizza either! I don't know what it is about them but I can never get the dosage right, I'm either too much up front and not enough later, or just too much or too little, it's not even consistent, so I avoid them as not worth the maths!

I don't eat pizza very often either, it is a treat. I up the number of units I have before eating and keep checking afterwards. I am on humulin M3

I generally avoid pizza too - sends my blood sugar ridiculously high and can't seem to get my insulin dose correct with it. Another food that does that for me is naan bread so I tend to avoid that as well now.

Aha! the pizza effect - as described and explained by both Gary Taubes in Think Like a Pancreas and John in Using Insulin. High carb, high fat content - same for naan and various other things - pasta with eg Carbonara sauce etc.

Split the insulin for it! Easier on a pump, just do a multi-wave bolus. On MDI you need to do separate jabs though. X% upfront, and the rest later. However the percentages you need and exactly when you need em is anyone's guess - so you'll have to experiment. I found for me, on MDI, approx. 60% upfront with the rest about an hour later worked OK. Not perfect whatsoever but there again, pizza is only once every few weeks anyway chez nous, so it ain't likely to kill me if it isn't bang on!

Think the usual advice is split it 50/50 - but as per usual - YMMV !

I wish I could get Dominos to block my phone number! Not frequent but more than occasional food for me, mainly due to laziness and hectic lifestyle, but where else can you get food within 30mins whilst you run round like a lunatic doing domestic chores. I agree that they do mean 8 hours of higher than preferred BG levels, but I haven't yet got brave enough to really up the insulin dose beforehand, mainly as they are only eaten at night so don't want to risk the nighttime issues. I am also advised not to do corrections either at the minute, just to remember and try to work it out better next time.

That said I too wake up overnight with odd/weird dreams sometimes after a particularly heavy nights eating, so I might have to look into that side of things too....

i don't eat pizza often but I've found that my results are very much dependant on the type of pizza I eat. If it's really fatty with lots of cheese and a large base / crust it ends up being a bit of a nightmare. If I have a better quality pizza , not too much cheese and a thin base im fine. I'm on MDI and take half my insulin upfront and other halfway through the meal. That works for me. X

My daughter went to a party last week where the food consisted of pizza and chips. Her blood sugar a couple of hours later was 23! 😱😱 I have no idea whether my estimate of the carbs was really that far wrong or whether that's just pizza for you, she rarely eats it so I haven't developed the tactics for dealing with it effectively. Pleased to say she came down again without any cannula changes needed!

On another note, my daughter's favourite chocolate bar is Wispa, and we seem to be developing a pattern of her having a nasty hypo 1-2 hours after eating one, this has happened 3 times recently. I know that chocolate contains a lot of fat which slows down digestion, so presumably we'll have to use extended boluses of 2-3 hours to avoid this problem in future; oddly though, no other chocolate has the same effect, she can eat that with no problems at all. Work that one out!! Diabetes is fun, isn't it! (Especially at Christmas!)

Oh yes, a laugh a minute eh?!

I have major issues with pizza so, these days it's a very rare treat indeed - even without considering the low carb thing. Oddly, I have less trouble with Pizza Express pizzas than any others, not sure why. These days, if we want something nice, my pal and I head for Nando's and the piri piri chicken with sweet potato mash. I can do that with no trouble at all.

Pizza and chips - a double whammy. 😱 I don't have either very often but if I do have chips from the chippy it plays havoc with my levels for hours afterwards. Fat and carbs and one injection = corrections. 🙄

We have pizza fairly regularly and it doesn't seem to mess me about too much (famous last words!). I find it easier than some supposedly straightforward things when doses/ratios etc are behaving. Easiest if I don't massively overload on the carbs though. 3 slices of a smallish one and lots of salad seems to be about right.

I have worked out pizza for me. I have to have extended bolus (used to be two injections). Chips aren't a problem either. For me, it's egg fried rice from a Chinese. Leaves me high all night.

I also find that if I eat certain sweet things, I go hypo two hours after. If I have a sweet day, like Christmas, I can bet I will have a hypo.

Same here, everydayupsanddowns. I have two slices and tons of salad, and we go for the least cheesy pizza available. I do find myself looking at hubby, eating slice after slice, and thinking "you lucky b*****d"!🙄 Doesn't happen very often...🙂

Thanks all!
I think I'll stick to the Pizza Express pizza, the ones with the salad in the middle, as they seem much more controlled for me! Just means hubby will have to take me out for dinner more... oh well! 😛
