Hi MillyMM73, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis - how did it come about?Hi
Was diagnosed with type 2 last week. Started taking Metformin. Had terrible abdo pains for past cpl days, feel awful. Has anyone else suffered like this when starting medication? If so, any advice?
Hi Milly...initially Metformin can upset your digestive system...that has happened to many of us here...it may settle down...when I first began using it...I had the very same problem...however...it did settle down after a couple of weeks...had no difficulty since...it can take a little time to get used to it...so if you can persevere...worthwhile trying...if it continues...exacerbates... then there are alternatives which are said to be gentler on the system...your GP or DSN can discuss those with you...if you have any other questions...don't hesitate to post them here...many knowledgeable type 2's here who will be able to point you in the right direction...give you the benefit of their experience...'straight from the horses mouth' so to speak...good luck...be interested to hear of your progress.Hi

Many people suffer side-effects from the metformin, but these should hopefully subside after a couple of weeks. If you are still suffering after a couple of weeks I'd suggest asking your GP/nurse to prescribe the 'slow-release' version, which many people tolerate better 🙂
It's worth learning about diabetes and how to manage it - I'd suggest having a read of Maggie Davey's letter and getting hold of a copy of the excellent Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker. There are links to lots more useful resources in our Useful Links thread, so do have a browse 🙂
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns and we will do our best to help! 🙂 Diabetes is a serious condition, but it can be managed well with the right knowledge and application, so try not to worry! 🙂
I hope you are feeling much better soon and can enjoy the wedding 🙂Thank you. I'll definitely get reading your suggestions. 🙂
Went to see doc today as this pain has been worse than after an op I had!Thought I could take pain but today has been horrendous and I'm off to a wedding in Ireland for the wknd. They suggested I stop then restart when I come home. Feel like such a wuss
They're testing for a UTI too so, in a way, I'm hoping that's what it is!
