Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi

Have recently been diagnosed with type 2 and just getting used to the testing, monitoring and change of diet. Actually loving the dietary change as my old diet was getting a bit boring and bland to be honest. Not so keen on the testing bit but goes with the territory I guess. Weirdest thing is my sight has changed temporarily. Have worn glasses for well over twenty years but for the last 2 weeks my vision has greatly improved whilst the diabetes is stabilizing and have no need for glasses. Was kinda hoping it would stay as it is at present but both doctor and optician have advised it will go back to being bad and will have to wear glasses again. Still is fun whilst its lasting. Has anyone else experienced this with their vision?

Hi and welcome to the forum. I've worn glasses for about 6 years now, unfortunately no improvement in my vision since being diagnosed nearly 1 year ago.

Welcome to the forum, sPuRs7402. It's not uncommon for eyesight to change while blood glucose is being brought back to normal, so it's recommended not to get glasses or contact lenses make up to temporary new presciption. You might be lucky and be able to do without glasses for a while, but keep check on yourself, especially if you drive. It's also possible if you are around 40 - 50 years old and were short sighted, that your eyesight is becoming long sighted, coincedently at the same time as diabetes diagnosis.

The difference in BG, causes the eye to change shape - it's really weird - hence, because some sight probs are shape related (astigmatism being the most commonly known one) - that's bound to change. Thing is when your BG is going up because of diabetes it normally doesn't suddenly do it overnight, it's very gradual, hence your eyes adjust to it quickly as they go on. You wouldn't believe that was possible but having worn glasses for 50 years, when I had my cataract in one eye done recently - OK for a day or two everything was just a blur - but then it began to improve and when I went for my post-op check-up - I could read all the way down to the bottom line of the eye chart! - I don't remember that EVER happening even when I was 16, before I had my first pair of reading glasses. I couldn't see well close up though cos the astigmatism needs correction, and though the left lens in my non-op eye was fine - it sent the op eye (the right one) blurred LOL.

Straight from the hospital examination to my optician! (I'd made the appointment hoping they'd sign me off, could always cancel it if not - but they did!)

Hi Stitch thanks for the welcome. Really freaked me out when vision changed actually thought I was going blind whereas they were going the other way. Albeit temporary. Still very weird atm ..

Hi and thanks for the welcome. I actually got my glasses broken at a music festival (in a good way) the same week diagnosed and so had an eye test which was fine for a week and then went back as sight had changed and they retested and did all new lenses which consequently had changed again. Was only after two weeks I kinda panicked that I couldnt see at all with glasses - went back to doctor who explained what was happening and same with optician who am retesting with in about 3 weeks. Initial thing was pure panic but then realised the diabetes had actually improved my eyesight but bit disappointed that I am going to go back to being reliant on glasses again. Am actually loving not needing them atm 🙂 Thank you for clarifying. Everything is a bit blurry at the moment (no pun intended) and just trying to adjust to new way of life

Hi Jenny

Thanks for the welcome. Yep its a bit bizzare huh. As I said before am actually loving not wearing glasses at the moment. Takes me back to my twenties. When the optician said the other day it was temporary and gonna go back to glasses like before was a bit disappointed as was getting used to not wearing them. Going on holiday tomorrow and so gonna buy loads of cheap ones in all different styles whilst I dont need prescription ones again lol. Could be my last chance to wear some cool rip offs before I have to go back to prescriptions

LOL - I'm on husband Mk 2 and he's 'only' known me since 1993 - and he couldn't get used to me without glasses at all - wasn't sure if he liked me without! I loved it ! Odd feeling breeze on my eyelids though and my cheekbones ..... and RAIN at the time! Plus my fringe, or odd loose hairs settling across an eye - didn't like that!

Hello and welcome from a fellow T2

Welcome aboard 🙂 The eye thing is fun isn't it! I still have to wear specs (blind as the proverbial without them) but my prescription went way better in one eye, although not the other, but he has other issues bless him. He's a he because he's awkward and complicated, the other one is female like the rest of me because she's much more straightforward and quite attuned to her emotions 😉
