Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi
I was diagnosed type 2 a couple of months ago after 2 or 3 years borderline. I was prescribed Metformin but I'm not happy taking them, a) because of the side effects (although I realise these normally settle down after a while) and b) I want to try dieting my way out of it.
Question is if I try the 5/2 diet, which I like the look of, is it ok to nibble, when peckish, a stick of celery? I've always loved celery so it seems a good way to overcome any pangs.
What do others think? Are there any dangers?
(PS I know there's an old saying that you use more calories eating it than you gain from it, but hmmm.... not sure about that!)

Graham

Celery is the Devils vegetable unless it's sticking out of a Bloody Mary.

Welcome Graham.... From a fellow Celery lover, though I think we are in a minority on these boards You could try Bone Broth as well on your fasting days

I like celery too. Ideal I would say although I haven’t tried surviving on 500 calories!

Welcome to the forum. Not know about the celery but I can't see why not. I certainly could not survive on 500 calories a day.

Thanks for support everyone. I've got past my first 2 days of 600 cals - no probs so far and celery helped, though I dreamed of eating with mature cheddar which is by far my favourite way. The Diabetes nurse at my GP's insists I should cut down on various foods, but cutting down generally on cheese is hard, as is bypassing chocolate on the shelves in shops, but I am trying to be firm about that.
We'll see how we go.
Graham

Well done so far. Cutting out or down on the thing we love is hard but worth it in the long run.

I’m a celery lover too. I love it with either cheddar cheese or caramelised onion hummus, but I will eat it on its own too
I don’t discuss my diet with the practice nurse as we have differing ideas and as my last Hb1ac was 36 she’s stopped asking or telling me .
I hope you find your diet suitable , let your results speak for themselves 🙂

Cheese? Why ever not?
It is low in carbs - and so are the high cocoa chocolates. Perhaps some moderation but a chunk of cheese with a Lidl protein roll and a tomato is what I take out with me if I am to be back late, and the 81% chocolate from lidl is an occasional treat.

Hi @Graham Follett
Age wise I am not far behind you and I have gained a new lease of life since I was diagnosed.
Firstly A big welcome to the forum.
I was diagnosed with T2 in September of last year and given absolutely zero guidance.
How I approached it was very simple.
Joined this forum.
Looked for guidance and the Food and Carbs thread is particularly informative.
Bought a testing meter.
I immediately put myself on a Low Carb/HighFat/High protein diet that includes cheese, which I eat daily and eat a lot of, meat, fish, eggs, butter, berries. almond soya milk, 85% dark chocolate again which I eat on a daily basis and green veg such as aspargus, sprouts, broccoli etc.
I cut out starchy foods such as potatoes, bread except high protein Lidl rolls, rice, noodles, and biscuits and milk chocolate etc.
Exercise a litte, did zero prior to my diagnosis.
Drink black coffee by the gallon, water, black and green tea.
Overcame my pie cravings.
Net result after the first 3 months, weight loss 15 kilos, HbA1c down to non-diabetic range of 33 from 78 and cholestrol down from 4 to 3 and off Metformin. I eat like the proverbial horse.
It wasn't to difficult and I was totally surprised at what I can actually eat.
There are some really excellent ideas on that food and carb thread and in particular the what did you eat yesterday section, worth taking a look.
Cheese is totally allowable it is fats, and I seriously eat lots of it. Cheddar, Camenbert, Stilton for example and have an addiction to Blue Cheese
The things to avoid are any foods with a high carb content so always check that out.
It really isn't as bad as it first seems when you get into the diets and the way of doing things.
I for one was immensley relieved
Good luck and keep us updated how things go, we are genuinely interested.

I concur with @Vince_UK. I am also following LCHF & find it easy to stick to as I don't feel I am losing out on anything. I have lost 4 stone & although my overall Cholesterol figure looks high, my ratios (breakdown of LDL/HDL/Trigs are perfect) so no statins for me. Took a bit to 'train' my GP, but she is fine about it now.🙂 I stick to natural fats & avoid trans fats & processed food.

I love celery in any form. Raw with a ‘healthy’ dip, soup or roasted with other vegetables. Celeriac is similar and tasty and quite versatile .... chips, roasted chunks, mashed, grated raw in salads.
