Hi all,

My name is Chantelle, I am 31 and am a mother of 3.

I was just diagnosed today but don’t have any further information of my numbers, have an appointment with nurse on Friday. As far as I have been told I will be prescribed Metformin, which I was on during 2 of my pregnancies having had Gestational Diabetes.

I have been attempting weightloss for almost 2 years since my son was born. Motivation comes and goes and I have fluctuated around the same weight losing a few lbs and then gaining them back. I am hoping that this diagnosis will give me the final push I need to get the weight off and become healthier and fitter for myself and my family.

I really struggle with my diet as I am a fussy eater but I am on a waiting list for therapy to try and help with this issue.

That’s all for now, bye 🙂

Hello and welcome. For many type twos, the ordinary uncomplicated sort, simply reducing the high carb foods in the diet can have a very significant effect - as it it reduces and goes away.

The sensitivity to carbs does remain - though slightly altered - after 4 years of normal my reaction to eating too many carbs is to put on weight at an alarming rate, so I stick to stir fries, salads, curries are eaten with chopped cauliflower rather than rice - but I must be one of the few people who have not put on weight during the last year.
As you are newly diagnosed, though, it is your blood glucose rather than your weight which should be the main concern.
Was your Hba1c at diagnosis very high? If you don't know it now, the nurse should tell you - and it is not up to her how you start to treat yourself - many newly diagnosed type twos argue for a few months to sort out their diet before medication.

Metformin is fine for some, but for those who are sensitive in the worst case it produces explosive incontinence and I can't imagine coping with three children, with the summer holidays imminent, with even mild diarrhoea

Having gone through the gestational diabetes in 2 pregnancies I know what to expect, I am however feeling very disappointed that after 2 years I still haven’t been able to get my weight under control and avoid this situation.
I didn’t get any of the numbers when I got the results but will be asking the nurse at my appointment on Friday.
Found controlling my sugar difficult during pregnancy even with metformin and insulin before every meal, hopefully the metformin does the trick this time around as I can’t bear having to do the injections every day.

Hi Chantelle, welcome to the forum.

I'm glad to hear that you're meeting with a nurse on Friday as she can provide some additional support and let you know you HbA1C numbers as that will help keep track of your progress.

It's easy to say but don't be hard on yourself re your weight not being under control. Hormones and life with young children can severely impact your weight and blood sugar numbers.

It's worth keeping a food diary and be brutally honest about what you eat. You can then look for healthy swaps and alternatives that won't spike your blood sugar levels. Most people find it useful to buy a glucose meter to test the impact their meals are having on them. You can buy one online on Amazon or Agros.

It's helpful to take things on step at a time. If there's anything we can help with do let us know as we're here to support you along this journey.
