Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello

My name is Colette and I was diagnosed with T2 in 2005. I started with an improved diet, then metformin, then basal bolus and now on Humulin m3. I am a bad diabetic who is poorly controlled. I need a good kick up the a**e! I skip my meds on occasions and then binge on chocolate. Ok, that's my confession over. I need to get back on track, lower my bs (usually between 12-14!) and lose a bit of weight. My doc thinks I should try low carbs......I also need to learn to look after myself again. Any advice welcome I am not sure that mentally I have truly accepted my diagnosis all these years later

Hi Collette, I have a bad past as a type 2 as well, I made my mind up after a week in hospital at the end of January this year that I will manage this and maybe it cant be beaten but I have to make sure it doesn't beat me. I think the only Kick up the A that counts is the one you give yourself. I have brought my HbA1C down from 118 at its worst to 62 since Jan, as the test was taken mid March this will still reflect a period when I wasn't managing myself properly. I am now always under 100 carbs a day, mostly 50 to 60, My BG have been Between 4 and 8 for 3 weeks, it can be done, its not easy, we are all different but you need to find what works for you, And do it for you. Good luck Al

I think a lot of us have gone off the rails at least once — I certainly have. If you can at least find the rails again, that's a start. 🙂

The LCHF diet is a good plan, and one which works for many people; at the very worst it's unlikely to do any harm, which is more than can be said for the so-called "balanced" diet which has been pushed for the last 30 or so years. One tip is to allow yourself an occasional treat, so that life is still worth living; it's been said repeatedly on these forums that if you buy very dark chocolate (at least 85% cocoa solids) and allow one or two squares to dissolve slowly on your tongue, you get a lot of satisfaction with minimal carbs and with no need to binge.

Hi Colette, welcome to the forum 🙂 Good for you for deciding to get to grips with things! Watching your carbs is a great idea - I would suggest starting a food diary, recording the amount, in grams, of carbs in everything you eat and drink each day. Alongside this, a programme of testing to determine the effect of your meals on your blood sugar levels will help you to clarify what items you tolerate well, and what you might need to consider reducing or removing from your diet - have a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to understand what I mean by this 🙂 It might also be useful for you to read Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter to make sure you fully understand Type 2 and what you need to do to tackle it.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns and we will be happy to help! 🙂

Hi Al. Thanks for your reply. You have done well. I hope that I can do as well over the next few months 🙂

Thanks Robert for your reply. Where can I find this LCHF diet? Sounds like I need to check it out 🙂

Welcome from a T2 who's 15 months in.

Thanks Ralph. I have been diabetic for about 11 years, but have been off the rails for a while - Had a bad dental infection - after three lots of antibiotics I was 'threatened' with IV antibiotics. Scared me that my body was trying hard to fight this infection and not winning - kicked my a***e a bit. So hence the keenness to join 🙂

My sympathies and understanding. My big infection was in my legs (celluitus).

Hi Colette
Welcome aboard, sorry to hear about the infection hope that's cleared itself up now 🙂 Hopefully the folk here can help we're generally a nice bunch 🙂
