Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, I am new to this forum but not new to type 2. I managed to reverse an hba1c of 49 to 36 a few years ago by doing keto. But my hair started falling out and I got a load of kidney stones and gradually went back to old ways. Have been in denial for a few years and during covid have put on loads more weight as been eating everything I shouldn’t. I’ve now had to face up to it and was horrified to have an hba1c of 106 and really high blood pressure. I immediately cut out sugar and white carbs, but haven’t gone as strict as before, keeling carbs to below 100gms a day, sometimes it’s only 50. I’ve also cautiously started on metformin and am on my 2nd week now up two pills a day. Fasting bg has been around 11.6. I wonder how long it will take this time? Has anyone had good results from just restricting carbs rather than going keto? Would appreciate any help and support, I am feeling a bit scared!

Welcome to the forum @kazz94

Sorry to hear about your raised A1c and blood pressure, and the challenges you had following a ketogenic way of eating.

Well done on deciding to make some more moderate changes to see how that goes for you. Many members of the forum find that a moderate or low (rather than very low / keto) approach suits them well, and provides good results.

There are many different approaches and ways of eating that can be helpful for diabetes management. The important thing is to work out what works for you as an individual.

You might find some inspiration in these different meal plans:

Hi @kazz94 and welcome from a fellow type 2 🙂 I've been very low carb since diagnosis but have never done keto. I've lost 4.5 stone, which took about 9 months and managed to get my BG down to 37 in about 5 months, so it is doable. I was on 4 x metformin a day at the time, and I'm down to just 1 a day now.
You may want to merely reduce your carb intake rather than going all out like I did. I cut out all bread, pasta, rice and taters, but I've learned since that it's better for you to reduce them gradually. This will avoid any risk to your eyesight, and hopefully won't leave your skin as baggy as mine is now!
Loads of tips and inspiration here so you should do just fine. Don't forget to fill up on proteins and lots of veggies (especially leafy greens) and, by the way, low fat isn't encouraged here! If you are reducing carbs you need to include fats in your food. Best of luck

Thanks for the welcome!

Well done on the weight loss, that’s a great result! I’m hoping to shed about that too! But I’m nearly 60 and on betablockers so might take a bit longer x
