Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, here is a grim overview of why I've joined. I am overweight (2stone) and have high blood pressure. Last year I also went on to hrt 2 mg for early menopause (started at 44). I was warned last year about being pre diabetic too. I suffer from stress and anxiety (mainly due to work) and low self esteem. I have tried losing weight and exercising - gave up caffeine, cakes and chocolate (which is very difficult for me) and also began exercising most mornings, before work and walking most nights for 30 mins. The weight has continued to creep on which is demoralising. I am due to the docs next week for blood pressure discussion (might have to go on tablets) and also a blood test for diabetes. While eating healthily over the past 6 months I am now aware that I have perhaps chosen to eat the wrong things too for diabetes.

Hi @Brooksie and welcome,

Sounds like you've had a rough ride with things but it's great to hear that you're still determined to exercise and get healthy. Hopefully the doctor can help shed some light on things for you.

Please feel free to ask us any questions you have as we're a pretty supportive bunch here

Hi Brooksie
Well done on the exercise which will have prevented it from being any worse.
Hopefully now you’ve realised that your diet may not be diabetes friendly, you can make the adjustments you need and start losing weight.
Don’t give up, you are clearly well motivated and will find a way I am sure.

Hello @Brooksie , welcome to the forum. I agree with Emma it does sound like you have had a rough ride.
Well done with the exercise, though you may have put on some weight, it’s probably help you stop putting on more .

If you don’t mind me asking What hrt are you on as I am wondering if that might not be helping with the weight loss but I’m no medic.

The trouble is some things that are considered healthy aren’t and too much of anything is bad and I’m betting we are going to give you a big supprise on what’s good for us

We can sure help with advise for pre diabetes and diabetes . With the right info diabetes can be well controlled and pre diabetes can at times be reversed and often the type of diets we on here follow results on weight loss.
Many of us on here follow a LCHF regime (low carbohydrate high fat) rather than calorie counting. Don’t worry about the high fat bit, in reality it’s normal healthy fats .

Ask us all the questions you want about diabetes, we’ll do our best to help.

Personally I would find it hard if not impossible to give up coffee.

I have some suggested reading for you , for future reference it’s at the top of the newbies forum, the thread is called Useful links for people new to diabetes.
useful-links-for-people-new-to-diabetes
Scroll down to the T2 section . I suggest you start with
Maggie Davies letter.
Test review adjust by Alan S
Their is a link to a highly recommended book by Gretchen Becker , type 2 diabetes the first year. though it’s meant for T2 diabetes it’s fine for pre diabetes too.

If you decide to self test and your gp practice won’t provide a glucose meter and test strips, sadly this is often the case , you’ll find a link to one of the cheapest meterswe know of to self fund, the SD CODEFREE meter, it’s the cost of the test strips you have to watch, they are are £8 for 50 where high street brands are £15+

If you would like to see what we eat
what-did-you-eat-yesterday.
We have some innovative cooks who put their recipes here
For future reference both are in the carb/querie forum.

Welcome Brooksie, sorry you have had a tough time, as the others have said you have done SO well with your exercise and I have no doubt that when you get your diet sorted, your weight will come down 😉

Thanks everyone. What a lovely welcome to a great group! Thanks for all the tips, think I've got a lot of reading to do
Looking forward to reading the different threads. Xxx

Take your time with the reading, you sure don’t have to learn everything yesterday.
