Welcome to the forum @Jacinta

Hope your appointment gives you some answers, and gets your treatment started.

If your result was an HbA1c and is 12% (the old way of measuring it) that is really quite high. If it was a spot-check blood glucose result of 12mmol/L this is again high, but may not indicate the same sustained levels of high blood glucose as and HbA1c (which reflects glucose levels over the previous 3-4 months.

If there is a chance you are T1, and have those kind of high levels, do be careful if you get a ‘pear drop‘ smell on your breath, become breathless, or experience nausea or abdominal pain. These could indicate DKA which needs urgent treatment and is connected to T1 going off the rails.

Hope you get some answers soon!

Jacinta, Mike was only warning you that IF you get those symptoms you must seek help, but do not worry too much. It doesn’t sound like you are currently hitting the sort of levels where this would happen as yet. For example my levels were way over 30 on a blood prick test at diagnosis and I am still here 19 years later. Try not to worry till you get further tests. Hubby’s brother lives in Aus and has been battling cancer for years. The Aus medical system is positively exemplary.

Thankyou for the reassurance, yeah I been over thinking everything before I know what type I am. I’m just scared like literally .

Apologies! I didn’t mean to cause alarm. DKA is what can happen if T1 remains undiagnosed where the person isn’t producing much if any insulin and the body begins to break down fat or muscle to get the energy it can no longer access from carbs (because of the lack of insulin). A byproduct can begin to raise the acidity of the blood, which is not good news.

But this would ONLY apply if you were T1. It’s not something to worry about... as @Pattidevans says, many T1s run much higher BGs for weeks before diagnosis (mine were in the high 30s).

Sorry for the silence, can you still have a normal life with this ??? I mean like can you still do your everyday activities eg, going out to see friends, working , walking around a golf course an as such ???? Sorry for the questions , cause I have to accept this as this will be the new life for me and I will have to force myself to accept it wether I like it or not . I still want to be able to do everyday things , is this possible ??? Only reason why I am asking is cause I don’t want people to recognise or know I’m going through this , the only people that know is my mum , fiancée and his dad . I basically want to hide this part of it while living healthy and exercising to make it a normal thing I am doing. I’m basically watching what I am eating , I have noticed since limiting nearly all of my bad diet and eating healthy I haven’t been hungry like I usually am . Like I’ll have 3 tablespoons of Greek yoghurt , not massive scoops then I’ll put 3-4 raspberries, same amount of black berries and 1 cut in half strawberry on top then that usually does me til lunch time. Is that normal ??? Like I’m not craving anything bad anymore . It’s the same for lunch and dinner.

You can have a completely normal life with diabetes. I take insulin and live alone, work full time, go for walks, swimming, eat out (when there’s not a pandemic), regularly drive 350+ miles alone, everything I did before.

Thankyou Lucyr , if I can do that still and have a normal life and carry on what I am doing then I think I’ll be okay and I’ll just have to slip this new diagnosis in as it will have to be the new norm from now on . I over think everything and makes situations sound way worse then it is to be honest .

Are there any particular situations you’re worried about? There might be some full time jobs that are affected by diabetes, for example astronaut I imagine, but a huge amount won’t be.

Basically what people think and judge of me because I have it , I have been judged all my life by certain friends or certain family members (2 people specifically) and unfortnately I’ve now have that embranded into my brain that I’m going to be judged no matter what I do in life because of that , I’m 29 years old and I’m still in fear of it, I’ve done councilling for it and spoken to others about it but for some reason I can’t shake it off, I use to be a person where I didn’t have a care in the world until so many people have judged me and made sure I new about it to. I want my old self back where I don’t have to worry about any of that anymore .
horticulture or retail or cleaning. If I can do any of those jobs I’ll be fine . My question is do I need to inform the employer about my diabetes at all ??!

I don't know about the system where you are but here in the UK a workplace will normally have a firstaider who would be called if somebody became unwell at work, so in the event that you had a hypo or became unwell having the knowledge that you are diabetic ( telling someone, a medicalert or similar) would enable them to respond and give you the correct care in a timely manner. Otherwise you may find yourself being carted off in an ambulance when just some sugary drink or glucose tabs would suffice.
I had a colleague who frequently had hypos but we got to recognise the symptoms and were able to give the appropriate treatment. But initially we did not know they were diabetic so thought they were having a stroke.

Ahh Thankyou for that , I’ll have to look into it more as I’m in Australia so I wouldn’t have a clue . Oh dear that wasn’t good , hope your colleague was fine after the hypos ?!.

Yes he was but I always worried about him as at one time he was on his own in an office, he was a lecturer and sometimes it happened when he was teaching and his students would have to come to get me. I think his awareness was not great.
