Hi all and thanks for all who replied to my plea for help yesterday. I have a telephone consultation with my GP later today and have taken your advice and looked at the various links you advised and feel better armed to ask the appropriate questions. It's just all very daunting when I believe I am eating what I should be eating but as yet my readings aren't significantly coming down. I've never been overweight but have recently lost 2 stones, down to 11st 7lbs. All symptoms started when I quit smoking approx 1.5 months ago. I took tablets to help me do this which had a list of side effects the length of your arm, some of which were the dry mouth, unquenchable thirst etc etc. I put it down to this. I was eventually persuaded to get the free diabetes test at the chemists. My pharmacist's eyes almost popped out her head with the 32.5 reading. The 25.9 reading was taken about an hour after a breakfast of weetabix and skimmed milk and taking my tablets. The GP has already doubled my original dosage. Thanks again for your help. I'll definately be reading all your advice from now on.

I'm glad we have been of help to you. We try to help as many people as we can, even if it is only making suggestions on what to ask of the medical profession or what colour socks to wear.

I am still finding answers to all kinds of things, I was diagnosed in 2006 and there are people who have ben diagnosed for longer who are still finding things out.

We probably eat better and have a better understanding of our bodies than non diabetics.

Great! It's good that your feeling more informed.

I'd be tempted to ask you GP about some Ketostix for testing urine. Given a figure as high as 30 you would wonder how much insulin you are producing, and if you produce very little you will get a high ketones reading.

Although, if you had a couple of weetabix, there is a lot of carbohydrate in them to raise your blood sugar level.

Just off phone to GP. He will be sending educational leaflets and has referred me to a support group although there is a 2 month waiting period for this seemingly. I've been taking a note of my readings this week and he has told me to continue to take Metformin twice daily but to double the amount of Gliclazide again and to come in to see him next week for more blood tests. Current reading of 20.5 still way too high but at least it's moving in the right direction!

Dear Raymond,

Only just caught up with this thread. Firstly welcome to the forum, clearly you are getting good advice. Did it include this?. A number of us have followed this advice, or something similar, and if followed correctly the results are spectacular! It can be summarised as "Eat to your meter"!

Regards Dodger
