Hi Sarge1519!

Did your GP tell you any details - what number your HbA1c was for instance? (if you're diagnosed with diabetes it will be 48 or higher assuming you're in the UK)

Are you starting on any medication or going to try to get your blood sugar levels down just with diet?

You will need to reduce the amount of carbohydrates you eat (all carbs not just sugar) to help your body out anyway if you have type 2, as medication can only do so much

just got the news from my gp, that i have diabetes
Hi Sarge

Welcome to the forum, this place will help you no end, I joined as soon as I was diagnosed as I dont know anyone in real life with diabetes this was a godsend.

So as @42istheanswer has asked, do you have any more details so we can help you get on track

i had a telephone consultation with my GP at 11 30 today it is type 2 diabetes, too much to take in all at once. Anyway he has started me on metformin once a day, and i have to make an appointment with the nurse to discuss the situation and give urine samples to check my Kidney function. All a bit overwhelming and I haven,t quite taken it all in at the moment.

Many people find it overwhelming to start with but it is very much a condition that with the right dietary regime is very manageable. Your HbA1C result will tell you how far into the diabetic zone you are and therefore how much work you need to do to bring the level down to normal. 48mmol/mol is the threshold of giving you a diagnosis. It will be Type 2 from clinical symptoms rather than any of the blood tests you will have had.
Have a look at the information on this site, the Learning Zone is a good place to start and also this link may help you with some ideas of where you need to be going with your dietary changes. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/.
Metformin is a medication which helps the body use the insulin it produces more effectively but diet is just as important if not more so.
Many people find it helpful to keep a food diary of everything they eat and drink with an estimate of the TOTAL carbohydrate not just sugar and they can see where some savings can be made. The suggested amount of carbohydrate is no more than130g per day, the food diary will help you see how far you are from that.
It is a good idea to have a list of questions you want to ask for when you have your appointment.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis @Sarge1519

It’s perfectly natural to feel overwhelmed and knocked sideways by a diagnosis with diabetes. Did it come completely out of the blue, or have you felt that something wasn’t quite right for a while?

Good to hear your have an appointment with your nurse coming up. Hopefully that will give you a chance to get checked over, and to ask any questions you have.

If you’d like to start building up a picture of diabetes and its management, you might like to register with the Learning Zone. It’s packed full of bite sized modules that you can take at your own pace.

Alternatively for a more personal account of getting to grips with type 2 in the early days you could read through Maggie Davey’s Letter to the Newly Diagnosed and Gretchen Becker’s book T2 Diabetes, the first year, which you can work through gradually

Good luck and let us know how you get on 🙂
