Hey lovely people!

I've never used a forum before! My name is Emily - I go by Em most of the time though! I have been running an instagram account for around 2 years called @dolceanddiabetic and I have just set up a blog dolceanddiabetic.wordpress.com - ready to be more open and honest about my 18 years with T1D...

Lets chat!

Hello @dolceanddiabetic ,

Thank you so much for joining our forum. What made you join our community?

Hi and welcome from me too.... a bit late it seems as your original post was 28th Oct 😱... not sure how so many of us didn't pick up on it, but that doesn't mean you are any less welcome.... just that you must have caught us napping.... except for Josh of course who is clearly on the ball!

Would you like to tell us a bit about yourself and how you came to be diagnosed? Things like your HbA1c result, if you know it and any medication you have been given for your diabetes. How have you been managing the last few weeks?
Have you managed to make any changes to your diet yet and if so, how is that going?
Is there anything particular you don't understand or want to ask about. If so please shout up.
Look forward to getting to know you better.

@rebrascora I was diagnosed with T1 17 years ago and have no idea what my Hb1Ac was and don't consider it relevant any more.
I suspect the same is true with @dolceanddiabetic who was diagnosed 18 years ago.

I have just had a peak at the dolceanddiabetic.wordpress.com blog and love your mascot.

Oops sorry! I must be losing my mind!

Hey!!
I know I really do think I caught so many people napping but thank you for your response! So I was diagnosed nearly 18 years ago, I was only 5 and I actually had a viral infection which is what kicked my diabetes into action! I can't remember a huge amount from then, but if I shut my eyes i could still tell you the exact set up of my hospital room! and how awful it was being 5 years old, see-through from the rapid weight loss and being surrounded by loads of Dr's and nurses trying to get a drip in the back of my little hand!

So I have been using the freestyle libre from around 3 years now and switched from MDI to the Omnipod last October! I use humalog insulin with my pods. I do not know what my A1c is at the moment but I am due it soon!

My biggest struggle over the last 18 years was definitely my mental health & EATING - I can't tell you how much I struggle with food.

So, any hints and tips of food would be great! It's so important to learn!

Aw thank you! I'm still working on it in the background but can't wait to take it further! He's the cutest!

That sounds really rough!
I am very fortunate in that I developed it late in life and managed to dodge a DKA event.
I have struggled with mental health and comfort eating for years but because I was initially thought to be Type 2 I cut my carbs right back (I was a sugar addict pre diagnosis) and really made a gargantuan effort to try to reverse it. Was gutted to find 5 weeks later that that was not going to be possible and started on insulin the following week but had pretty much kicked the "sugar and carb habit" by then and despite being told to eat normally (which I tried for a few days) I have been following a low carb, higher fat diet ever since and it really helps me to feel healthier both mentally and physically as well as making it easier to calculate and balance my BG and insulin. The best bit about it is that I just don't crave the stuff that I used to and it isn't even difficult to watch others indulging or refuse sweets/chocolates/cake when offered, which I find incredibly liberating. Not saying I have a great diet as I enjoy rather too many bags of pork scratchings and glasses of alcohol (both low carb options) than I probably should (although not excessive) but I eat a lot of very healthy stuff too and really enjoy my food. The only thing which would be better would be to have a personal chef to cook my low carb meals but that is never going to happen and eating out can be difficult but the pandemic has put paid to that!

What is it that you struggle with about food?

Cool site DD, I looked a little just wanted to wish you best of luck with it and mi looking forward to reading the blogs

Welcome to the forum @dolceanddiabetic

Like @rebrascora I am a late starter with T1 (aged 53) so have a very different experience from yours, but once here it is a balancing act that we all manage in our own way.

If you tell us a little more about your issues around food we can be more specific in our advice.
