I recently attended a diabetic seminar in West Lancashire. Was told by the nurses of a new drug which encourages weight loss by dramatically getting rid of glucose through peeing. Anyone else heard of this?

Sounds like one of the 'gliflozin' family of medications:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliflozin

We have some members who have used/are using these, with generally good results, but always essential to be aware of any side effects, such as UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections). Hopefully they will be along to share their experiences 🙂

@Northerner - never heard of these.

Do you think these would prove better than Victoza and Lantus?

Hazel - as you know I'm not T2 so I wouldn't ever be asked to take them - but my understanding ever since I was first diagnosed has always been that sending urine full of sugar over any length of time is a pretty guaranteed way to damage your kidneys, cos the molecules of glucose are bigger than all the stuff that's supposed to be there so if you think of the door into the kidney being like a sieve, the sugar 'grit' eventually makes the holes bigger and then all the bugs passing by can now get through these bigger holes instead of passing along and being dealt with by the body some other way like they are supposed to.

I'd have to have a long conversation with a consultant about it, consider it and be convinced, before I'd want to try em.

I'm not knocking them because I'm not in a position to do that - but just telling you all my doubts - OK I wholeheartedly agree the weight loss would be excellent news for all who need it - BUT ....

I read about these in a paper / website a few days ago (apologies but I cannot remember exactly where). I seem to remember that Northie is right that they are a member of the Gliflozin family. The report did state about the weight loss but came with massive warnings of potential problems with Kidneys as per TW has stated above.

@Stitch147 is taking them I believe and we did have someone else who was taking them a while ago with some improvements - that was at least 2-3 years ago, so they are not really new 🙂

@Hazel, not sure if it would be preferable to Victoza - both have potential side-effects. I'd stick with what you know as it seems to be doing OK for you 🙂

Having lost 8st to date using Victoza, as Northener says why change when what I am on seems to be working

I think that's the right decision Hazel - would be different if you had terrible probs with Victoza, obviously you'd more than likely want to consider it if you did. I've lost sight of your progress with it of late so wasn't aware you'd lost so much by now - brill !

I had never heard of Victoza before today and i have only just heard about gliflozin over the last few days it is really interesting how pharmaceutical company's are getting round the problem of excessive glucose by changing the way the kidney filters and how they are stopping processes chemically inside the human body to have that desired effect

I am not saying for one minute that they have not gone through the extensive clinical trials and its safe, it is just amazing

Well don't you ever wonder things like whoever has the sort of brain that could invent eg analog insulin or insulin glargine instead of 'just' distilling it out of pigs and cattle pancreases?

A hundred years ago, me and you would both be 6ft under by now.

It doesn't bear thinking about really, I decided that in 1972 when that realisation upset me so much - so I don't think about it very much at all, just accept it gratefully and thank God they did.
