Hello everyone - we are new parents of a 13year old daughter diagnosed recently with Type1

Hello and welcome! My daughter is 14 now, although was only 6 when diagnosed. Make sure you go in to school and see her form tutor and get a care plan set up, this is a set of instructions which details what to do in the event of lows and highs, lunch time procedure etc. Your diabetes nurse can probably help with that in the first instance. I'm sorry I don’t have time to write more now but if you have any specific questions please do ask 🙂

How recently diagnosed is your daughter? Probably everything is scary and confusing at the moment, but just take things one step at a time and it does get easier, honest!

Hi - she was diagnosed 3 weeks ago and yes it’s still a bit overwhelming at the moment. The NHS and local Diabetic team at the hospital have been amazing and we have a Care Plan already. Back to school this week!

Hi and welcome. Your head will be spinning but it will get easier.

Hi - sorry to hear this but honestly it does get a bit easier once you all get into good habits and won't stop her doing about 99.9% of whatever she wants to do in her future as long as she and you play by the rules of the 'sport'. Highly recommended is this book by Ragnar Hanas (et al) which he wrote for parents of T1 kids but useful however old you happen to be when diagnosed

Welcome to the forum @Cous25
Sorry to hear about your daughter’s diagnosis but I am pleased that you have found us.

There is so much to learn so quickly at the start. I am pleased to hear that you already have a care plan in place for her return to school. One important thing which I am sure she has already sorted is to have her hypo stuff with her all the time. As a teacher I had some everywhere. The only student I taught with T1 knew where they were too, and we watched out for each other.

It will be helpful for her if she is happy to talk to her friends about her T1, especially around hypos. I know my students picked them up more quickly than I did sometimes.

The book by Ragnar Hanas that @trophywench has recommended is very useful and clearly explained. It is also regularly updated with the latest tech available and things are changing so quickly so well worth getting the latest edition.

Keep in touch and keep firing away with any questions. No one will mind.

Welcome to the forum @Cous25

Sorry to hear about your daughter’s diagnosis. You are both bound to be knocked a bit sideways to begin with, and it can feel a bit overwhemling and mind boggling in the early months, but it will soon all become second nature.

Hope the start back to school goes well - was your daughter diagnosed during the coronavirus hoohah? Hope she gets good support from the school, teachers and her peers.

Is she on pens or a pump? Does she have any snazzy gadgets like a Libre sensor to wave around and distract attention?

Hi - she was diagnosed 3 weeks ago now. A few days after I saw the article in the press about possible link with T1D and Coronavirus - time will tell I’m sure!
She’s on pens and we’ve been told about the Libre device but we’re giving it a few months to let her get used to the whole topic.

Oh it helps so much if you have a good medical team, I don’t know what I’d have done without ours in the beginning. They didn’t seem to mind how often I got in touch asking questions!

I would highly recommend the Libre - it vastly reduces the amount of finger pricks you have to do!
