I am newly diagnosed and had a reading today of 15...very worried but very determind to beat this issue, some supportive answers please lol

Hi & welcome! My fasting BG level at diagnosis back in March last year was 15.6 so pretty much the same. High, and it takes some focus and work to get it down to nice levels, but very doable.

This is my advice-to-newbies summary: https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/hi-t2-newbie-here.80852/#post-897974

One of the main things to be aware of is that every T2 is different, so unfortunately what works for one person may not for another. You have to put some work into finding the best strategy for you. And it's absolutely normal to be confused and overwhelmed to start with. But on the other hand you don't have to get everything sorted overnight - small steps, learn a lot, think long-term.

Good luck!

With any luck all you need to do is cut out the high carb foods which are considered normal today.
As I am 2 and 1/2 years from diagnosis with Hba1c of 91, and I have not been in the diabetic range for two years just from reducing carbs I am perhaps rather unconcerned - but basically - its the carbs causing the problem, and as we don't need to eat them reducing down to a nice big salad and a stirfry of assorted low carb veges daily will - hopefully - solve the problem. Add in any protein and fat (avoid things touted as low fat) and drink coffee with cream - because you can.

Hello @Gricep ,welcome to the forum. Firstly try not to panic as with the right info and a bit of work by yourself Diabetes is a condition that can not only be managed well some of us become fitter even healthier than we have been for a long time.

Their is an awful lot of misinformation about diabetes out there . Basically we are usually fine with protein, good fats and veg esp those that grow above ground many of us need to be careful with fruit, berries are often tolerated better, grapes are little sugar bombs.

Its carbohydrates our bodies can no longer handle too well, esp the starchy carbs.
Just to make Diabetes more err ... interesting 🙄:D we are all different in how the various starchy carbs affect us, Ie some of us can happily enjoy a nice bowl of healthy porridge while others have to avoid like the plague as it spikes our BG (blood glucose) to high.

When you are ready for a little light reading
big fib , sorry

If you wish to test to learn how the various carbohydrates affect you sadly it is very unlikely your gp will provide you with a glucose meter and test strips This is the cheapest meter we know of to self fund the ongoing cost of the test strips , around £8 for a pot of 50 where other brands are over £15, all meters sold in the UK. have to comply to certain standards

Most importantly ask all the questions you need to about diabetes, we’ll do our best to help

I often feel quite yucky (sorry that’s the only way I can describe it) when my levels go too high. My eyesight can go blurry too

Not on my own then lol, i find drinking water and taking a buscapan fixes it in an hour or so

Yea, i spent years feeling a bit rough but never knew why, maybe it was my sugar control all the time, cant wait to fix this

You will get there, I know it probably doesn’t seem like it right now but in a few weeks you should see a vast improvement in your BG levels. We often say this is a marathon not a sprint and it really is true, at the mo you are beginning to learn what carbohydrates and how many of them your body can and can’t handle , along the way you are probably going to have a few supprises not all of them will be bad

I found it helpful to keep a food diary as well as logging my results.

Thats great thank you, do you know why the blood sugars are higher in the morning ?....mine was 11.5 today but i feel as well as i have for a few weeks

The morning levels are often the last ones to start coming down.
Their is also dawn phenomenon, this is where our ever so helpful liver 🙄 starts to increase our glucose levels from around 3am so we have the energy to get up and hunt a mammoth for brekkie.
If you test around 2 or 3 am your levels may well be lower than you waking levels,

Also our levels can start going up as soon as our feet hit the floor in the morning , both of these happens to me sometimes.

Many of us test before we get up

Welcome. 10 weeks ago I was where you are now. Cutting my carb intake and ditching everything sugary worked for me, got me down from 20.5 at diagnosis to an average of 6 now. Oh, and I'm exercising more even though it's just swimming and walking. Lost some weight but feel better for it. Loads of good advice on here.
"Even though it's just swimming and walking"? Best exercise ever....never seen a fat Salmon, oh wait, Carp have enormous bellies, forget the fish analogy. 🙂
