Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello all. I’m a veteran (no not senile, young and fit!) diabetic, type 1 for over 60 years (from babyhood!). Have been very well controlled all my life. Enjoying the freedom that today’s technology brings, from pens to blood testing, makes it all so much easier. However having said that, I still have sudden drops and unexplained highs!

My problem these days is that I wake up at a reasonable level and by the time I’m ready for breakfast it’s shot up and with an arrow straight up so still rising upwards fast. This doesn’t happen every day which makes it more difficult to cope with. We do a lot of long haul travel nowadays and I need to keep level. My clinic couldn’t advise me.

Anyone got any suggestions??!!

Hi Gillk16, welcome to the forum 🙂 It sounds to me like Dawn Phenomenon, where the liver releases extra glucose into your bloodstream to give you a 'boost' of energy as you wake and start your day. There's a good explanation of it here:

What insulin regime are you on? A pump would probably be the best solution as you would be able to set different basal rates for different times of the day.

Trouble is it’s not always like this, I can get several days when it’s ‘normal ‘ levels. I have Toujeo at night and Humalog during the day.

What sort of increases are you seeing between waking and breakfast time? Do you have to tackle it with a correction added in to your breakfast dose and do levels return to normal by lunchtime?
