Type 2
I am newly diagnosed with Type 2 and I am taking metaformin twice a day - I am wearing a Libre2 monitor but I am confused by the readings. I am following a low carb diet and losing weight, however today I wasn’t feeling great so just had coconut milk for breakfast and a cup of coffee my readings have continued to rise all morning up to lunchtime and at the top of the parameters I set, all I have had is another cup of coffee, why are the readings going up and not down?

If I don't eat first thing then my numbers continue to rise too - I suspect my liver is trying to be helpful in case I need to trek for miles to find food.

If we don’t eat our liver often tries to help out by giving us the fuel (glucose) we need to go out hunting for our meal.

Their are many other things that can affect our BG levels , one of them is illness, my body often tries to alert me this way , sometimes a few days before I know I am ill lol.

Thank you for your response, I am used to taking in information but this has proven to be a steep learning curve for me, every piece of advice helps.

Welcome to the forum @Nisa

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but glad you are finding strategies that work for you.

Yes it could well be the Dawn Phenomenon, which is a throwback to our hunter-gatherer past, where the liver would release glucose to kickstart the day (for some people this happens in the early hours, while for others it is triggered when they get out of bed.

Everyone has it, but some see a bigger BG rise than others, and it’s a lot less noticeable if you don’t have a wonky pancreas!

Some people find that a lowish carb snack last thing at night helps to keep their liver happy overnight, while for others eating something fairly promptly after rising can switch the liver dump off so that levels don’t continue to rise.

Hope you find a way to reduce the impact that works for you. 🙂
