Hello everyone

I'm back on to ask questions........

Does anyone know or have any experience of neuropathy? The reason I ask is that I've been having problems (in how I was 'feeling') from about a year after being diagnosed with type 1 in February 2009 and it is only this past few weeks that I've realised that another way for me to describe these 'feelings' is numbness and tingling throughout my whole body. The past week this has been fairly constant in my toes and sometimes fingers and is always much worse at night.

What confused me more was that I've been constantly told by professionals that my control is good and I was under the impression that neuropathy occurs when control is not so good and for someone who has had diabetes for over 20 years.

I went to see my GP yesterday with said symptoms, also have joint ache in my fingers and she was really good, tested my feet, have good pulses and passed the 'prick' test. Have to have bloods taken and maybe further tests, but she has put ?neuropathy on the blood form.

Can anyone please shed some light onto this as on one hand I feel relieved to know that I wasn't going mad talking about these 'feelings' I keep having and on the other scared of the consequences of developing neuropathy.

Thanks

Jackie x

Hi Jackie I suffer neuropathy in my feet its a real pain pardon the pun and im on nothing for it, all my doctor said was if i keel good control of my BS then my Neuropathy should not flare up.The night time thing soudds very familier sometimes when I wake i the night my feet are so tingly its hard to get back to sleep....

Hi Steff

Think our replies must have crossed in the airwaves!!

Thanks for your reply, its good to hear from you and yeah I like the pun, it does seem to be much worse at night and makes it difficult to get to sleep too. My doctor did say that they prescribe Amitryptiline for neuropathy...... but we've to wait and see for results from blood tests. Back in on Thursday so should know more then.

xx

Hi Jackie
I suffer with neuropathy, my Diabetes is in good control, i too find it worse at night and can;t sleep and my feet itch so badly. I am on Amitryptiline as well as pain killers but it don't work for me. Hope you get sorted real soon.

Hi jax. Sorry to hear about your problems. I think it's more common for T2s to have neuropathy due to the often long build up of high BGs before being diagnosed.

T1s usually have a more sudden onset and regain decent control quickly.

I wonder if there's a possibility of an allergic reaction to one of your insulins ?

A couple of members have reported this and swapped back to the old animal insulins or just changed to another type.

I've never had anything like that and don't think I've ever had neuropathy as I certainly have no problems with it now.

Hope you get to the bottom of it and hope it's something that's easily sorted. 🙂

Rob

Hi Jax.

I too have numbness in my feet, have done now for 10yrs. It's got worse and sometimes the pain is unbearable. Not much can be done apart from looking after them and making sure you wear good shoes with thickish soles and plenty of width so not to squash your toes. It's a very uncomfortable feeling.

I go to an (NHS) podiatrist and have my nails cut because i can't feel my toes they do all the necessary tests and give me advice.

Hope you get sorted. EVE 🙂

Many thanks for your replies and to Rob I had been thinking about whether or not it could be the insulin, there are various variables to be included hormones, what food I'm eating
The worse was the feeling that I wasn't being listened to and because my levels are 'in control' I thought that I was being dismissed.......
Hopefully I will get to the bottom of this and start feeling much better soon.

Thanks again x

It's strange how GPs can put everything down to diabetes while your BGs are slightly out of range and then dismiss everything as imagined when you're in range. 🙄

Hahaha so true Rob, wished that I had gone to see this doctor the first time round, but hey ho at least I feel that I'm being listened to now.
