Northerner,

You did well to get to your neighbours, and good on you for talking to your neighbours!

I keep sweets and drinks all over the place, car work home several places, find I always over eat when low low as scared of what could happen I guess, then take ages to sort it self out. I guess we're always gonna be learning!

Also great way to celebrate! mines in november, so I may hatch a plan togethr by then!

Hi Northerner,

Sorry to hear you've had a bad hypo....glad you feeling better now:D....good on your neighbour for helping quickly..
Honey is a good substitute if Glucogel..'Hypostop', not available or even icing sugar.
Nathan's worse hypo...was 1.1...It was horrendous...Ambulance was called, because he had started to pin wheel..so it was very difficult for me to help, and get anything in to him...because I am on my own with him.

Heidi

Hi Heidi , I know its probably obvious to the others but what is " pin wheel " Ive never heard that expression before :confused: Do you mean fit ?? Ive seen my brother fit and it scared the hell out of me .😱

Hi AM..

Sorry should have said what I meant...Pin Wheel...very similar to a fit/seizure..but it was the way nathan was moving his arms/legs...in a kinda of riding a bike motion...hope that makes sense..difficult to explain...its what the ambulance crew called it...
Yes it was very scary....and certainly dont fancy a repeat..nor does nath..although he was oblivious to the fact.

Hi Northerner,
Sorry you had a bad hypo - you must have felt really bad! If you dont like fizzy drinks put 3 or 4 grains of salt in it and it will go flat almost immediately. Also, have you tried glugojuice?Or try buying some of the cartons of orange juice as these last for ages in the fridge. Hope your feeling better now and remember your more at risk of another hypo for 24 hours if you have a really bad one!😱Bev x

oh yes i know what you mean !!! yes ive seen that , you cant get near them to help .

Gald youre feeling better Northener!

I was always told not to correct at all for 24hours after severe hypos. But to be honest if theyre that bad i tend to turn in to an eating machine and cant stop myself so i always do about 50% dose or id be stuck in the 20s all day!

x

how are you now northener x

Hi, thanks steff and everyone. I've been OK, just feeling a bit 'washed out', but haven't dropped low again after my lunch. I was 4.9 before evening meal, so it looks like I dosed myself correctly at lunchtime. I'll bear in mind what you said bev - I'll flatten some lucozade and keep it by my bed!

I'd just love to know what it was that made me suddenly plunge like that! It was very frightening because it's the first time I've had one where I felt as though I only just hung on. I've had a couple of fast-dropping ones before which seemed to be related to my basal, as they happened an hour or so after I'd had that. But this one was over 3 hours after my breakfast with no rhyme or reason. Let's hope it's as rare as chicken lips!😱:D

Thanks Viki, I didn't need to correct as I was only 6.3 at lunch an hour after taking the hypo treatment stuff - expected to be much higher as my neighbour put about 6 sugars in the tea she made me (tasted like it anyway!)🙂

I'm glad you're better. I feel for you.

I can't understand how you and other Type 1s can drop so quickly without much warning.

Just a tip from my friend in France about the emergency lucozade - open the bottle completely and then screw the top up just enough to stop it leaking in case you are weak.

Thanks tez. I think I've been a bit blas? about it until now, as usually I'd just pop in a jelly baby or two and feel fine, so never really thought I might need something even quicker acting than that. I'd love to know what the biological mechanism is for blood sugar to suddenly get depleted so quickly, rather than gradually as it normally is with me.

Glad to know you are ok now Northerner 🙂🙂🙂🙂 Take care and rest up !!

Hope you are feeling better Northerner. My lowest was 1.9 and it knocked me out for a couple of days. I hate the feeling of hypos and I get many of them. Its the agression I feel inside, I just get so ratty and want a fight, although I don't have the energy. My mouth goes tingly and I can't get my words out. My whole body hurts and my legs gave way once. My ex husband said I was walking like Andy Pandy. Note, EX husband, I got rid of him after that. Infact he was of no help to me when I was diagnosed and never knew anything about diabetes and didn't want to.

Thanks Lorraine. This was the first time I'd had trouble getting words out - try saying 'I'm having a hypoglycaemic attack' when you're having one! I was also worried because I was upstairs when it first hit and when I realised the bedroom jelly babies weren't working I was worried about walking down the stairs as I felt so woozy and uncoordinated. My steps are quite steep and I can have problems at the best of times because of my bad leg (the naughty one that snapped!).

Well, I am 7.1 before bed, so that should be ok - I've tended to be very stable through the night since I worked out my best basal dose (fingers crossed!)

I have lucozade or glucose tablets. Although I seem to have more empty lucozade bottles than full ones. I seem to have a phobia about throwing the empties away lol. Took the dog out for a long walk tonight over the common and realised I didn't have the glucose tablets with me. Luckily I was ok but very cross with myself for going out without them.

How lovely it would be to go back to the days when you could just walk out the front door without checking you had everything with you, or the need for a donkey to carry all the stuff....monitor, finger pricking thingybob, lucozade, insulin, needles, more lucozade, glucose tablets, more lucozade just incase.............

Note, EX husband, I got rid of him after that. Infact he was of no help to me when I was diagnosed and never knew anything about diabetes and didn't want to.

Sounds like my EX. You know they are wrong for you when they don't bother learning anything about diabetes 🙄🙂

You're absolutely right there - I can't imagine not wanting to know everything I could to help someone I cared for - I'm even got upset a little while ago when I met up with an ex of mine that I hadn't seen for 10 years, and she was telling me about a problem she'd had with a detatched retina - I couldn't bear the thought of her suffering like that! I guess I'm an old softie!😉

No repetition today of the horrendous plummeting hypo. I took a unit less with my breakfast and went for a run - I was 8.8 before the run and 7.7 when I got back. I was a leetle bit worried about going for the run, especially as I don't like to carry stuff about with me (normally just three dextrose tablets), but remembered I had something I was given ages ago called 'hypofit' - it's a gel in a little sachet. I reckoned that would be faster acting than the tablets should anything occur. I keep meaning to get a Cram Alert to show I'm diabetic.

Hope that you are feeling fine and glad that you managed to sort it,, Thank god your neighbour was in!

Take care

Julie x
