My Type 2 journey

Having read about that now it does sound like it.

Going to get a blood sugar monitor as not using anything at the moment, can I have some recommendations please as to which type, I'm not loaded either so am not looking at top of the market just something that'll give me accurate readings

GlucoNavii, TEE2 and Contour Blue seem to be ones with the cheaper strips which is the important factor.
Thrush is a side effect as you are essentially peeing excess glucose and the yeast which causes thrush just love a sugary environment.
Sooner you reduce your blood glucose it will be less likely.

Thrush :(

Is this going to be a regular occurrence on this medication?
Unfortunately it's more likely until your blood sugars reduce and your urine. contains less glucose. Try Canestan cream for topical relief. You can buy it over the counter from the chemist.

I was occasionally found, years ago when I had too high BG so peeing it out then would get thrush, which for a lady causes mega itching, so I had to try and relieve it somehow, anyhow - sitting on a comfy chair at home with my husband on the settee, on a towel with no pants and an unopened bag of frozen peas between my legs. Trouble is with ladies, if you scratch or even slightly inflame those bits, it sting like merry hell when you pee. I have no experience about how it affects men as no chap has ever been that brutally descriptive with me. All a bit TMI, generally really.

The only cure really honestly is to get your blood glucose down lower and keep it there For Ever.

Day 5 on the cream and everything is looking rosy 🙂

I've got to go for my three month blood test since I was diagnosed next month and the told me it is not a fasting blood test, It always has been for me up to now, why would this one be different?

Glad to hear you are feeling better Ian.
The HbA1c test doesn't need to be a fasting blood test as it measures the glucose attached to your red blood cells. As they live up to 3 months it gives a good average of blood sugars but is weighted more to the most recent month. There are plenty of other posts which probably explain it better.

The previous test may have included other tests like a lipid profile which is often specified as fasting. If they also want to test your fasting glucose (different from the Hba1C) then it would be fasting.

I find eating fruit keeps my sweet craving away, although high in carbs is fruit better than biscuits ?

hi Ian , welcome to the forum ,i find that the machine helps me too keep within a range ie for me between 5 and 8.4 but everyone has different ranges , so basically if i do a fingerpick test 2 to 3 hours after a meal and i was between these numbers then i know my body can deal with what I've just eaten . Eventually after testing for a while you can put together a few meals that are good and dont impact your sugar levels too much , i keep a diary of what i can eat , for me personally i think the machine i have is great and has given me a better understanding of how things work at breaking down what i eat in a day and has helped me a'lot to go in re-mission . I was on 3 metformin a day just over a year ago now I'm on one dapaflozin my hba1c has been in the 30s and my daily readings average around 5.3 , anyway good luck on your journey hope you find what works for you just try little changes to diet etc

some fruits are better than others ie try to stick to low glycemic ones

i find things like berrys like strawberrys , blue berrys , blackberrys are ok even a small orange but try to stear clear of bannana and a few more i cant remember the list but theres a few to try to limit tbo

Cheers mate.

I have to eat bananas as my potassium is very low, I drink tomato juice too, doctors orders

Fruit is a bit of a minefield as everyone says yes but it's good natural sugars and not refined

Avocado might be a better choice as a natural source of potassium - bananas are so high carb - I have not eaten one for decades.
If I needed to up my intake of potassium I would most likely change to a mix of potassium and sodium chloride instead of normal table salt, which I need this weather to prevent cramps at dawn.
I have found that carbs are carbs - there is no difference I can detect or discover between 'different' sources of carbs - starch, sugar, refined, unrefined, white brown, all are digested and end up in the bloodstream in very short order
