I ruptured a disc in my back about ten years ago and it took the best part of two years for the pain to go away. Moderate pain recurs after certain strenuous activities but now it's flared up again badly for some reason.

Not much pain in my back but that horrible burning pain deep inside my left buttock down to the back of the knee is murder. Taking naproxen and tramadol/paracetamol only takes the edge off the pain.

Anybody got any good tips for alleviating the pain please?

When I had it I got massages from a strapping young physio and did Pilates. Sounds like you have it worse than I did though :(

Have you tried a TENS machine? My ex had exactly what you have, and it worked for him.

LeeLee, I've not tried a TENS machine but heard good things about them so will get one this weekend and give it a whirl. Never has the term 'a pain in the arse' been more relevant for me.

Would acupuncture help?
Hope your pain soon eases.

Hubby finds laying on the bed for shprt periods during the day helps but as he is retired he is able to do so. Can the doctor offer anything or any help?

Hi folks - all the doctor does is give me more powerful drugs, not really what I want as they make me fuzzy-headed and that impairs my ability to work properly. I've just been looking at TENS machines and I'm going to pick one up from Lloyds pharmacy on the way home, hopefully it might help. After that I might try acupuncture if it's still bad.

I was reading that the Acticare TSE is the best one to get but it's ?260 on ebay 😱

The one from Lloyds is reduced to about ?25 so I'll try that first.

Thanks for the suggestions anyway, I'll report back on any progress 😉

Well I bought the Lloyds pharmacy Advanced Heated Digital Pain Reliever with Massage on Friday - special offer ?39.99 reduced to ?23.99 - and it actually seems to be working.

Bit of strange experience watching my leg twitch rhythmically but this morning I've been up since 7am and haven't needed any pain killers at all so hopefully I'm on the mend.

Thanks for the tips everyone 🙂

Don't let it fool you into doing owt to make it worse though, whatever you do.

I'll try not to thanks trophywench - the pain is always there in the background reminding me to be careful. Unfortunately having a desk job doesn't help with sciatica, or diabetes for that matter 😱
