MikeyBikey - The Road Back

Sorry to see it still doesn't look like it is improving. Sending more (((HUGS))) and hoping the next photo is going to show significant improvement.

Really very concerned that your frustratingly hindered by staff diabetes management is thwarting your body from healing itself. They really don't seem to be able to grasp how critical it is to manage your diabetes well during this healing process in particular and just how detrimental high levels are to it.

Your poorly foot looks very red and sore @MikeyBikey .Are you able to get the consultant to look at it again ?
It's so sad that you are not getting the medical support you need, both for your foot and your diabetes management. I hope it gets sorted out soon. Sending hugs x

All sounds like they really need to go on a course about how diabetes is treated in the 21st century.

Out of interest, do they have accurate figures for the amount of carb in your meals?

Sadly not! I asked for the carbohydrate content of main meals (breakfast not a problem as very limited choice) and was told they don't have them as the unit is for rehab and recuperation, and they don't want people worrying over calories (having lost 17 kg on the previous months I nearly said"Eff the calories I want to know the carbs'!) As today was meant to be my discharge date I will wait till I am home and put in a complaint to PALS who hopefully will not give the same corporate reply!

Oh dear. As with lots of others I despair with the treatment and total lack of care and joined up thinking that apparently is the state of NHS nowadays. I send you my best wishes and keep on fighting.

This was my meds at 8:00 last night. There are two Paracetamol and an antibiotic but unsure of the others. For instances I still .on iron tablets which are probably unnecessary. Yesterday lunchtime there was a better sister on and she letr opt out of the lunchtimr meds (Paracetamol and s laxative). Because of a poorly written discharge letter my GP surgery though I was home as they wish to review my meds and I feel they need a review.

After my Endarterectomy of the Femoral Artery I developed a rash on part of my left thigh. The acute hospital was acutely disinterested apart from suggesting using moisturiser that did not help. When I came to rehab the consultant suggested it was eczema and prescribed Betnovate ointment. It is now improving with normal areas of skin appearing.

In subsequent discussion it was suggested that it could be a reaction to the tubing inserted during surgery being held on place by s patch containing latex. This ties in with my banana allergy. Both bananas and latex have some similar protein structures that cause a reaction. However some people may be allergic to just one and not both.

As does Kiwi fruit.

If you are talking about Amitriptyline Mikey, I believe it was originally developed as a muscle relaxant for relief of muscle spasm pain and trapped nerves and only later found to be beneficial for anxiety and depression, so primary use is pain relief.

The foot was redressed yesterday and I think it is starting to look a a bit better. I really wonder if the backward step was caused by the tissue viability nurse using a dressing I am allergic to?

I am hoping to try using the prosthetic tomorrow as i have bot stood with it for nearly six months!

Your foot looks like it is healing better Mikey. I hope the wrong dressing hasn't affected the recovery process too much. Good luck with the prosthetic try out tomorrow. Sending hugs xx

From the pic I'm viewing, I'd say that looks much healthier, and a decent colour - not too pale or red.

Fingers crossed for you tomorrow, Mikey. Take it steady. Like all of these "not for a while" tasks, it'll take it out of you more than you care for.

Goodness Mikey I don't know how you cope with all this. I do hope things improve soon. It does surprise me a rehab unit does not know anything about carbs. There does seem to be such a lack of knowledge of this in the NHS and everywhere in general in this country.

I was in this rehab for two months after the original amputation in 2020 and had none of this nonsense. The GP who attended then mainly dealt with issues with the stump where the wound kept reopening. They have now retired and the one here most days although occasionally there is another doctor from the practice. My insulin and test kit were usually in the box I used for travel and work although there was one retired male nurse who kept locking it away which caused the same insulin/food timing issues as now. The physio was more regular then despite restrictions because of Covid. The food was better then as well - I think it was only partially outsourced then. I don't recall any insulin nonsense in the hospital where I had the amputation once off the sliding scale.

I did visit the flat with an OT and a physiotherapist on my busy Thursday and hopefully will get back in a week or two. I will write more about this another day.
