hi, can anyone recommend the best meter to buy, my his and is newly diagnosed as type 2 so we're guessing the doctor won't give him one. Also when is the best time to test to see what his levels are doing and how he is reacting to food? Thanks

Many people on here use the SD codefree meter, because it is accurate and very cost effective. I think a pot of 50 strips is around £8. There are many other BG meters available, but can be a lot more expensive.
A good time to test is first thing in the morning, and 2 hours post meal to see how the food has affected your BG. Also keeping a food and blood glucose diary will be extremely helpful 🙂

The SD Codefree is available from Amazon or Home Health (The manufacturers).

I am an SD Codefree meter user too. At around £8 per 50 strips I think it's the cheapest to use but is still a good meter.

Andy 🙂

Hi again if you're husband wants to find out how food affects him, then directly before eating and two hours afterwards.

Hi, I'd recommend having a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to understand the most efficient and effective approach to testing 🙂 It's all about finding out how different foods affect you, and this can be a very individual thing. I would also recommend getting copies of The GL Diet for Dummies, which is a very good introduction to the 'Glycaemic Load' approach to selecting and combining foods so that they have a slow, steady impact on blood glucose levels, and also the excellent Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, which can be a big help in understanding what to expect in these early weeks and months 🙂

Please let us know if you have any questions! 🙂
