Oh gosh, it's all so confusing isn't it I'm taking the standard Metformin but the doc did say if I was struggling with it I could change to the other one, but I will persevere and give it a chance to work. Thanks for all the support, I feel quite tearful just now, I've just laid on the bed as I'm so tired and think the Lupus is flaring again Enjoy your weekend ☔️ Sunshine and showers here
Honestly Grace...it seems like a minefield initially...what to do...where to go...there is a waking numbers thread here where members post their waking BG levels...try to have a look...join in...its a real incentive for me...demonstrates diabetes is a tricky little madam at the best of times...can catch us all out for no particular reason...no matter how experienced we are...diabetes is manageable...controllable...you just need to gain some confidence...believe in yourself...come on you're a grandma...if you can do that...you can do it all...regroup...give yourself a break...I'm a firm believer in the restoring power of a good cry...start off from the right foot...fresh day tomorrow...next week...when you're ready.

Diabetes is harder to get a handle on when you have other conditions that impact on health and the ability to exercise. Maybe you could try a smaller portion of porridge. Or try a protein based breakfast which many find more filling.

It will be eggs for breakfast tomorrow I think Just had homemade vegetable soup for lunch and level at 13.2 an hour after, hoping the readings will come down in the next few days once the Metformin has got itself into my system. I've just ordered the book Carbs and Cals as I understand it is invaluable for working out carbs etc and getting a handle on portion sizes Any suggestions on the best "snacking" foods would be much appreciated.

Many thanks for this info, taking it on board. First Metformin tablet earlier today now I am camped outside the bathroom !! The doc did warn me of the runs! Sugar levels at 13.0 after breakfast of porridge and perspiring for England (sorry folks) so not feeling well at all today!

Oh no! Sorry to hear that. Some people find the 'slow release' version a bit easier on the tum. And I think others find they have more trouble with carbier meals. I believe some of the 'gastric' effects may subside after a while.

Hope it settles soon, must be very uncomfortable for you :(. It's not called 'Metfartin' for nothing! 😱

It does sound as though the fewer tablets you can get away with the better.
I manage my diabetes through diet - I eat very well, just not many carbs.
Avoiding grains, potatoes, fruits which are very sweet, even legumes has put me in the normal range for blood glucose and Hba1c, but I took Metformin and a statin for five weeks and it affected my memory rather badly. Even now, almost a year from diagnosis and no tablets since before Christmas, I sometimes wander around looking for something I have put down and can't recall where it is. I am trying to relearn the songs I used to sing at the folk club.
It was not the only side effect, but the others have subsided since stopping the pills.
