So nearly 4 weeks in and changes ok. Apart from the 2 maltesers I had today with my afternoon coffee. Checking out carbs and what sugar's in those carbs. Still eating the odd slice of nimble with a dippy egg in a morning. But what's bothering me is the fat content as the nurse said my cholesterol is up too. I'm concentrating on carbs and sugar's too much am frightened I'm not eating the right amount of fat!! Also levels coming down nicely on 3 Metformin a day now. Oh and lost nearly a stone.

When there is believable data on dietary fat causing an increase in cholesterol I'll start to be concerned - though there would need to be some data on cholesterol causing problems too.
For me as an older woman, having slightly higher levels of cholesterol appear to be associated with a longer life span.
Cholesterol is used to transport fat around the body, so your weightloss would show that you have had a greater requirement for cholesterol to move the fat from cells to liver to be broken down.

I had the same issue.
Saturated fat shoots my cholesterol level up as well. I just don't eat it now.

Me too, at least for animal satfats.

But I just ate 4 lamb chops - first red meat in weeks. I'm probably doomed 🙂

I've chucked my rule book away. I'm in Istanbul, the diet is "meat" and carbs.

My cholesterol levels came down when I changed to high fat lower carbs I eat lots of cheese , full fat yoghurt , double cream meat eggs etc

Hi Caz, sounds good to me, one thing at a time, or it can get too much and be overwhelming. Nimble with egg, for breakfast, great. Two malteasers, pfft. We all need a treat now and then. Are you managing to exercise at all, as this will help with both glucose, cholesterol and stress levels?

I think the other thing to define is "up" and "down".

I use the classic NHS numbers as my target.

I dont like manipulating the figures to "ratios".
Each to their own though.

Hi Liz yeah I'm shortly going back to doing my Zumba and jogging as the doc said to concentrate on walking until my levels come down. But wow even a 6 mile walk reduced my levels but I didn't eat before I went so it was my own fault as they fell quite a bit so made me a bit cautious. It's hard to get the balance right but I don't want to be loading up on full fat stuff just to control my glucose levels or is that the key to it?

No reason at all to load up on high fat stuff.
It is one of the great myths that does get propagated though.

I managed perfectly well reducing calories, and reversed my diabetes, and controlled my cholesterol.

I've been low carb for a while now, and in spite of this week's wobble I'm usually under 5.5 am. And in spite of eating more fats my triglycerides, which were too high, are down too.

It's not so much loading up on the high fat stuff, it's more like adjusting the ratio of energy acquired from high carb foods. To be honest, these days I have perhaps just a little more fat in my diet than pre-DX as, then, I was looking to reduce my weight & was cooking as low fat as I could. Now, some 60lb lighter my cholesterol is OK (major improvement since DX) & my FBG hovers around 90...

Loading with full fat stuff may work for some, but not me. (need low fat to control IBS) We are all different and have to experiment to find the right balance. Sounds as if you learnt something from your walk though. Weight going in the right direction will also help. Good luck and keep in touch

That's reassuring for me as I was worried it would make my cholesterol high if I'm eating non low fat.

Many thanks Liz for the advice.

I watch my LDL and HDL, not just triglycerides.
Some on LCHF choose not to.
