I am doing OK with breakfast , especially enjoying eggs , mushrooms and cheese !

However I like my granola plus apples and blueberries ....and also porridge

But I am aware both granola and porridge are high carb

Are there any lower carb granola and porridge preparations out there ?

Lizis has a low sugar option ......but that's not entirely healthy is it ?

There are a few low carb granolas, but the real hurdle to overcome is the portion size.

pre-diabetes the portion size for me was dictated by the bowl . Now I measure 40-45g and look right down to the bottom to find it. One secret is a small bowl and a teaspoon to trick the brain.

Take a look at Paleo in Sainsbury's, also M&S have one which is more or less just coconut flakes that is even less. Both <10g with modest milk.

Both OK dry to as a nibble snack.

Make my own, toasted oats and nuts with added seeds. No dried fruit and a higher proportion of nuts and seeds than in commercial granola and eat I it with a hefty dollop or three of Greek yoghourt.

However, like @barrym the real trick for me is portion control. I don't go for weighing things out but my portion is 3 levelish dessert spoons. Experience tells me that is about the limit of what my system can cope with.

Keto Hana granola is low carb approx 9g carb per 100g but pretty expensive. I mix 50/50 with Lizi's low sugar for something which is about 28g per 100g but still only have 20g as a portion on yoghurt and berries.

Interested to know why you think the Lizi's granola is not 'entirely healthy'

Lizis low sugar has 45 g of carbs compared to the 9 g keto hana granola

I made a lot carb granola from a Caldesi book
- it was made from nuts, seeds, butter and fig with other spices in it. Delicious, but I just couldn’t stop eating it!

I did buy something once, but it was disgusting.

I am going to get some of that keto granola online from Holland and Barratt

It's expensive but I won't be eating it everyday and will fortify it with hazelnuts etc

@Taffyboyslim , if you have a look on the Diet Doctor website, he has a keto "porridge" lots of folks seem to really like.

I haven't tried it myself, as porridge was rarely an option I chose anyway.

The paleo food company have a lowish carb granola (20g/100) https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/the-paleo-foods-co-berry-almond-grain-free-granola-285g best used to top yogurt rather than a bowlful as the carbs will mount up fast otherwise

You can make your own using nuts seeds and coconut. https://www.ditchthecarbs.com/grain-free-granola/ is a good recipe that you can tweak according to what you have or like. I’ve browned it in a large saucepan, in a slow cooker and in the over. Just watch closely and stir frequently as there’s a split second between toasted and burned. Again check the carbs depending what you use and be sparing. You can stir this into melted very dark chocolate to make a sort of chocolate bark once cooled. Yummy.

There are porridge alternatives and its worth experimenting for which flours you like best. https://sugarfreelondoner.com/creamy-keto-low-carb-porridge/

Thank you very much

@Taffyboyslim The nicest and most porridge-y low carb porridge I’ve found is this one:

https://thelowcarbkitchen.co.uk/product/low-carb-porridge-280g/

It’s not cheap but it’s handmade and if you only have it occasionally rather than every day, it’s a nice treat. It only has 2g carbs before extras. No artificial sweeteners. It’s really creamy and tasty and a good size portion.

Looks great

Every other day eggs , tomatoes

Mon , wed , fri .....porridge or granola

Thanks for the thread. I feel like kindred spirit as I also used to smash through porridge for breakfasts and can't any more, at least not it the same way with the same portions

If there is a plus side to diabetes though, it's that it has reacquainted me with mushroom and cheese omelettes....

And actually that I've discovered (read: been taught by the good citizens on this website like @rebrascora ) that proper yoghurt is a winner for me. It allows me to still eat some of the old school nice carbs like porridge by massively moderating the pace of sugar release. Plus it's soooo much nicer than the low fat muck in my opinion

I suppose I'm lucky though as I'm type 1 and can have whatever portion I like which is a lot more flex than some others get on this site and thread

Oh and should send a plug for chia seeds. I'd never heard of them 6 months ago but will now take them on holiday too! Miracle things

Thanks also @Inka for the posh porridge link. I'm going to give that a try too

If only I could cook an omelette without it breaking into bits !
