Riley was 5.4 before bed. We like to be above 6 before bed so I gave him a snack which was milk and a couple of rich read. 5 minutes after having them he's 3.4! So confused!

He must have been dropping down already as the milk and rich tea will take a while to hit his bloodstream. Even something sugary would probably take more than 5 minutes to register on the meter.

I thought that. He did say before we tested before bed that he felt low so maybe it was already coming on. Thanks for response x

Good luck. What Matt said is good. I know you should not drink milk to raise blood sugar but I still do, (Because its slow)

I didn't know that about milk. He had glucotabs when he went low then another glass of milk and a couple of biscuits once he had come back up x

I use milk to bring me out of hypo's and find it works very well. If I have a late night hypo I don't like the taste of orange Lucozade when going to sleep so milk and biscuits always does well for me. Stacey, Rich Tea biscuits contain less than 10g of CHO per biscuit. You might be better off with Penguins, Kit Kats or maybe chocolate digestives or something

No they wouldn't DL - not with milk. There's too much fat and you are adding to it with the milk - remember this will be full fat milk.

Jenny with respect, if Riley is hypoglycemic then I suspect Stacey wants to bring him out of it as quickly as possible regardless of the fat content of the biscuit. I know that for you own part you favour orange Lucozade. It is one of the worst products you can consume in terns of negative health benefits. So if we are trying to establish which is worse for you, probably better not to have the hypo in the first place but if the little lad is having one skimmed milk and chocolate biscuits are one option that I sometimes personally use. I find that I can scoff plain Rich Tea biscuits by the wheel barrow and they have an almost negligible effect in bringing me back round 😉

Meters are a bit behind Stacey, so sometimes they can test a tad higher if your blood sugar is still falling, it happens to me a fair bit. You'll find as time goes on that Riley will be more aware of a rapid drop than a slow drop. The controversy of the milk is mostly because of fat content, not because fat is bad for Riley but because fat can slow down the release of sugar and you want the quickest solution to a hypo. I often have a milk chaser after the jelly babies have done their job if I need a bit of a bolster though and that works well 🙂. For a minor slow hypo where I'm tickling around the edges of a mid 3 I often find I can use a cup of coffee or a glass of milk to rectify the issue, but I would always go for pure sugar with a rapid drop, as you'll have noticed though we all have different approaches so you should go with what works for the young gent 🙂. Hope the hypo went on its merry way and you both got a good nights sleep 🙂. How's Riley doing with it all now, has he bounced back after his very short honeymoon? You too, are you feeling better about it now?

Having had 45 years of testing hypo treatments since I was 2 years old 🙂 and for more than 30 of them hating how long the hypo symptoms lasted it was an absolute revelation for me when I discovered Lucozade. Suddenly hypo symptoms were over so much quicker than anything else that I had tried. The only other thing that I have found that works just as effectively is berry flavoured Gluco juice - which is so small that it can be transported easily and is exactly 15g of carbs.

While Lucozade will undoubtedly bring you quickly out of a hypo I have made a conscious effort to avoid it. I did some reading a while ago when I felt that I was actually drinking too much of it. I was really shocked when I read the levels of glucose, caffeine and colourings. I will now do anything to avoid it. The link that I have posted is from the Daily Star and I fully accept that nothing that they print should be taken too seriously. The thing is though there is increasing evidence regarding the potential ill effects of the contents of Lucozade. There are loads of other sources of reference and when I was looking at this originally it was a case of typing "Is Lucozade bad for you?" in Dr. Google and I bricked myself at some oif the stuff I read 😱

Thank you for the link Diabeticliberty. A lot of it talks about the amount of sugar in Lucozade which is exactly the reason why I have it for a hypo🙂 Obviously not a whole bottle, just enough to get me back to a "normal" level and I appreciate a caffeine boost after a hypo. My goal is to get rid of the hypo as quickly as possible because I think that helps to keep hypo awareness and, fingers crossed, I've managed to keep that hypo awareness.

I can't do with any caffeine in the evening, keeps me awake for hours, so not what you'd want to be giving a child just before bed.

I'm sure Riley won't mind using chocolate biscuits instead of rich tea haha! He normally has a few rich tea with it. We only stick to rich tea as that's what they gave him in hospital after a hypo 🙂 xx

Thanks KC 🙂 we only have semi skimmed milk (well, we have almond and soya milk in too but Riley won't drink that lol) so I guess that's better than full fat for helping him rebalance after the glucotabs 🙂

Riley has bounced back after his honeymoon period which is good to see 🙂 he's taking it all in his stride again and I think it's down to the fact we are living the life we want to live rather than the life we felt diabetes was dictating to us 🙂 we are still following the rules and testing regularly but now the levels have evened out a bit (let's hope I haven't just jinxed it!) it seems so much less of a problem. Xx

Riley loves glucojuice but we can't find it in any of our local chemists :(

Have you asked if they can order for you , my local chemist are pretty good at ordering stuff!

That's exactly why we have not dabbled with lucozade 🙂 glucotabs work for us and 9/10 times correct Riley after one dose. 15 minutes later we give him milk and biscuits 🙂

In the 4 months since diagnosis Our chemist has failed to get his prescription correct once. I don't want to confuse them further haha! Xx

Oh, I understand. Mine is run by a husband and wife, I dread the thought of them retiring, they have been there 30years. It is within walking distance to me and they all so live locally!
