Relationship to Diabetes

I went to a presentation yesterday
LHB are trying to rationalise and get as many people onto cheaper strips as possible while at the same time permitting some choice and prescribing adequate quantities ( although suggesting 3-4 times daily as a basal bolus user as a minimum- DSN giving talk said ideally some people should be checking 6+ times daily but penny pinchers might interpret the lower quantity as the maximum prescribable amount)
So mylife pura, wavesens jazz, iBG star and Bayer as first line. Some others also permitted such as the Roche ones for the Roche pump users, and the ketone checking one where appropriate
I blagged 2 of the Jazz and my life pure and the Bayer rep also gave me a USB one
I'm trialling the Jazz and my life alongside my one touch ultra. I will go with the metre that is most consistent with the one touch as I trust this meter but am all for saving money on strips as long as they are accurate and I am prescribed sufficient quantities
So far the pura seems more accurate.
Oh and diabetes was very obliging giving me a rogue 22.8 this morning so I could try out the two new machines at the higher range!
Ypsomed ( mylife) also do minuscule prefillable syringes which are colour coded. So people that need help with their injections can get them pre filled by the district nurse for different times of day. Also handy for people who feel these are more discrete than a big insulin pen and for pump users to carry around just in case
They also do single use pen needles and lancets- they are " self sheathing" after one use. Very handy in the health care settling to reduce needlestick injuries ( new European regulations in place re these) but not too handy for those of us not too good little diabetics who don't always change things with every use or carry spares/ utensils for disposal
Lastly - see Pippa and Ben;s post on levemir
Aventis rep really p***d me off

Hoping they don't try and change my meter, I have a sentimental attachment to it! It's the meter that I was given in hospital 🙂 I've got several meters, but seem to prefer this one for some reason (an accuchek aviva).

I use the Mylife Pura for bedside and travelling and it's great, never had a failed reading, unlike my One-Touch. Really wanted to get the special edition black Pura which looked good.

Take care Abi, I don't think my trusty One Touch Ultra, which 2 years previous had read EXACTLY the same as the borrowed CGM graph line (all but 2 or 3 of the little crosses from calibrating, and I was doing it almost every fingerprick, cos I might as well, for 5 days until the sensor popped it's clogs) read right in the finish.

My meter said I was averaging low 7s, high 6s, but my A1c was always far far higher - the opposite of what it's sposed to. Didn't matter what I tried.

So I get my Roche Combo and do change to the Combo meter cos I want to use the bolus wizard - and it consistently read HIGHER than my dear dear trusty Ultra. Sent for Control solution, both meters 'correct'.

MADE myself trust the Combo.

Instant drop in A1c .........

Now - is this purely down to the pump or was it the meter, or a combination of both?

My HbA1c was higher using the Bayer meter than one touch-
hence I trust the one touch- think it's averages marry up better with my HbA1c.
And the pura meter seems to be within 10% of this. Jazz reads a bit lower

I would struggle to trust the iBGstar after my experience. Though I know some some are fine with it I lost trust after a month
