Libre 2 to be "phased out"

(& programmed to elude git hub developers.)
Not so sure about this, if you are refering to DIY Looping. As far as I'm aware there are people using the Loop and Trio apps to DIY loop with FreeStyle Libre 2+ sensors. I'm not yet on the plus, but hopefully the plus will work with DIY looping, as I've been having great success over the past year doing so.

Yes, the continued life of this larger sensor is a bit of a surprise to me. I guess it's still commercially viable, maybe because changing production lines turned out to be unexpectedly costly or something?
I wouldn’t disagree with your balanced as usual assesment either. Keep the same body of the unit give it an extra 24hours. Whopdee doo! The Libre 2 size works fo me. But a more universal smaller unit could be better (potentially) for all? It seems to work with closed loopers on a Ypsomed pump?

Sorry. More in reference to what I’m doing with MDI? Nice to meet you.

I'd thought that since they are discontinuing the 2 for the 2+ then there would be no need to change prescriptions, it's an evolution rather than a change.

I think they're still different so prescriptions need to change. If your prescription says "Libre 2" but that's no longer available, I think pharmacists would just report that they can no longer get that item (and suggest you ask your prescribed to request "Libre 2 Plus" instead).
