Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I have cfrd (cystic fibrosis diabetes). I've known it to come under type 2 but recently got told it could be type 3??
Anyway, i just used my libre to check sugars & they were high at 14.1. A warning came up saying check ketones.
I've never had warning on libre before & my cf diabetic Dr has never mentioned it to me before.
My sugars came down to 7 after a workout but dud ho back up to 10.
I've recently had food & took insulin but I'm unaware of what ketones are, how to do i know if i have them & how do i check.
My clinic is closed now but will ring them tomorrow.
Thanks in advance.

Glucose meters tend to be preset to warn you about ketones at 14, to be honest though if you were only briefly above that level and then came down again I wouldn’t bother checking. When you do need to worry about them is if you are ill, or are above 14 persistently. You can buy ketostix to check your urine at a chemist quite cheaply if you are worried. Blood ketone sticks are probably more accurate but very expensive and you need a meter that can read them, not all do.
Ketones are a byproduct of the body burning up fat instead of carbohydrate and can be a sign of insufficient insulin in the body, although at low levels they don’t do any harm and everyone usually has traces of them. You are right to ask your clinic though.

Thank you. I'm probably just overreacting as my libre sensor issued a brief warning.
I'm struggling lately in getting my sugars to a decent level.

Hello @Sugarcoated welcome to the forum.

Is your meter prescribed by your surgery or are you self funding either way can you inform the forum
what meter you are using? I ask because some of us have excess ketone strips and are more than
happy to supply these to you if you have a matching meter. The results you quote are acceptable and
a lot of us would me more than happy to have similar results although 14.1 is a high reading but we all
get it happen during our Diabetes journey.

I`m so sorry you have CFD but remember it is your Diabetes, we are all different with the control of our
condition so its specific to you how you control it, this forum will guide you as much as it can so can I
suggest you begin posting your morning results and the time in the thread https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/group-7-day-waking-average.20148/ just click on the last
number and post your results most of us do it and we have a bit of banter too.

Take care stay safe. x

If you have the Libre reader it can take Freestyle Optium ketone strips, if you want to send me a private message with your address i might have a couple spare that I can send you
